N-Gage: The Next Generation... coming in 2007

Nokia has posted a press release related to its keynote speech at this year's Game Developers Conference which reveals that its "next generation mobile games platform" will launch in the first half of 2007, "with a range of titles and devices". For more on developer information revealed at GDC read our related news story.  Another article about the same speech also mentions that by 2008 Nokia expects to have a userbase of 250 million Nokia smartphones.

Presumably Nokia have now rolled together their plans for a download service of current gen N-Gage games and their aim to bring out next gen games in 2007. The next gen games will presumably get star billing (and, also presumably, are being developed right now) with the current gen N-Gage titles also available to add some more meat to the package. It's possible that Nokia is delaying any kind of new launch until they have a strong lineup of launch games; one of the biggest failings of the N-Gage was the delay between the launch at the end of 2003 and the appearance of good exclusive games almost a year later.

Regarding the 250 million figure, it's still unclear if all of these will be able to access the games platform. Some at Nokia have talked about "finding a good fit" (i.e. matching models aimed at particular audiences with audiences that are likely to use games) but there's no technical reason why they shouldn't all use the games platform as they're all Symbian Series 60 devices inside, just like the N-Gage itself.
