More details of Nokia Belle Feature Pack 1

Published by at

Yes, we knew that the Nokia 808 PureView will come with Symbian Nokia Belle Feature Pack 1, but questions like 'Which other devices will get this update?' and 'What's in it?' spring to mind. Over on Nokia Conversations, a few more morsels have appeared officially. Here's what we now know.

From the NC piece:

The brand new Nokia 808 PureView comes with the latest iteration of the Symbian operating system. This is a good thing because Nokia Belle Feature Pack 1 offers improved entertainment options, personalisation choices and performance. It’s arrived on the Nokia 808 PureView, and will also be made available for new production and current users of Nokia 603, 700 and 701 smartphones in coming months. For other latest Symbian devices, we have just made Nokia Belle available, and now already more than 1 million downloads have taken place!

Announced as definitely in (Symbian) Belle Feature Pack 1 are: (my comments in brackets)

  • Dolby ® Headphone and Dolby ® Digital Plus audio processing (good to have, though not really needed - I bet 99.9% of people couldn't tell the difference)

  • Around 20 new and improved widgets – having even more content easily accessible on your homescreens (hooray)

  • A new, faster browser with HTML 5 support

  • The latest version of Nokia Maps (perhaps the big v4.0 by then?)

  • The recently announced Microsoft Apps (perhaps with the full Office apps this time, rather than just odds and ends)

  • A better notifications bar (with email integration, please, or don't even bother!)

  • A refreshed multitasking bar (app view thumbnails that represent the whole screen, not just the centre of each)

  • The processor speed of the Nokia 700 and 701 will be increased from 1GHz to 1.3GHz (Wow. Shows that these devices have the same underlying hardware platform as the 808 PureView, mind you.)

[Speculation alert] There's no word as yet on how many of the existing Symbian^3 generation will get Belle Feature Pack 1. My guess is that some devices (the C7, E7 and X7 stand out here, all with a 1GB ROM for fitting everything in) will eventually get a tweaked, slightly cut-down version of Belle FP1, designed for the slower processors. And that other, older devices (e.g. N8) will get much of the above (Maps, browser, widgets, notifications) via over the air SW_update 'performance improvements' patches, but that this won't be classed as 'Belle FP1'.

Just my guess!
