Get the MD-6 for a song to err... play a song

Reviewed over a year ago here when they were a surprisingly high £40 a pop, Nokia's portable MD-6 stereo speakers are now being sold off on Amazon for between £5 and £9 (depending on the time of day you look) - in the UK store, at least. I picked up a set and have put my own mini-review thoughts and some new photos below. Rock on!

First of all, here's Ewan's original review, with the speakers sourced from Nokia PR. I suspect that anyone who bought at the full RRP will have been a little disappointed, but this new bargain price brings the speakers into a whole new light. Here's my MD-6 set in action:

MD-6 speakers in action

Here are the MD6 speakers on Amazon. Quite a saving and excellent value at this price! Some notes from me:

  • Powered by four AAA batteries, the unit is heavier than it looks.
  • The speakers power on as soon as you open up the front hinge to reveal the speaker cones.
  • Audio output isn't room-filling, but is still pretty good considering the 1" cone size and there's good high end and reasonable bass
  • A power light illuminates when the hinge is open, reminding you that the speakers are 'on' (and thus draining the batteries)
  • The hinge closure isn't very secure and would easily get knocked in a rucksack or bag - a job for a strong elastic band?
  • The flying 3.5mm lead mechanism is a bit clumsy, with the jack itself hanging free - a cutout in the speaker body would have been neater.

Comments welcome if you end up picking these up at this clearance price or if you notice any other original premium accessories going this cheap!
