Ovi App Wizard RSS apps all get an auto-facelift

Published by at

It's nice when your app gets a facelift without even having to lift a finger. The Ovi App Wizard team has given all widgets created with their system a facelift, with a smoother interface, less quirks and with full Symbian^3 compatibility. Details and screens below, but suffice it to say that if you've downloaded a news/ RSS widget (e.g. the All About Symbian one) from the Ovi Store, then it's worth removing it and re-downloading - the new version will be worth it.

In addition to the design tweaks and wider device compatibility the wizard now allows you to publish Ovi App Wizard based content in more than twenty different languages. Furthermore the Ovi App Wizard itself is now available in Spanish, Italian and Russian, in addition to the original English. Finally the nifty Ovi Marketing Tool, which automatically creates advertising banners for Ovi Store content, has also been integrated into the Ovi App Wizard system.

New look design

Given the RSS feed information and choice of titles and logos from the Ovi App Wizard publisher, it's easy for the system to regenerate a new version of every publisher's widget automatically and this is what just happened.

Here are some screens of the 'refreshed' Phones Show widget:

First cosmetic changes: the pick list and close icons have swapped places with the 'logo' graphics; also notice the 'return' icon to go back to the top level of an app. Next, the pick list itself is sleeker and more Symbian^3-like. The font change does mean that some of my app's headings don't quite fit anymore, but hey, you can't make an omelette without breaking eggs!

Finally, the 'feature' in the App Wizard whereby a Twitter RSS feed wasn't handled well (every tweet was shown twice, effectively) has now been improved and the top level of a Twitter feed now shows correctly, with the right Twitter thumbnail, though the fonts could still do with some work as even the 140 character limit manages to usually exceed the display space allowed. Still, it's better.
