The Symbian Podcatcher comes to S60 3rd Edition

Published by at

The Symbian Podcatcher project has been in development for Symbian^1 (S60 5th Edition) for some time now, but it was announced yesterday, via Twitter, that Podcatcher has finally been backported to S60 3rd Edition. Nokia made the inexplicable decision to remove Podcasting support from their Eseries S60 3rd Edition Feature Pack 2 phones, so the availability of this could be a breath of fresh air for the enterprise-orientated platform.

Up until now, the only option for S60 3rd Edition Feature Pack 2 Eseries users to get podcasts was Escarpod, an open source podcatching application which Podcatcher is actually built upon. Escarpod users will be familiar with Podcatcher, and notable improvements include utilisation of album art and more conveniently laid out menus.

The current version of Podcatcher is 0.93 and should be considered as in a beta state. Indeed, I found a few bugs in version 0.93, including a crash upon importing feeds from an XML file. However, the project team need your support in the form of testers and bug reports, instructions on how to do this are here. Podcatcher will be the future podcatching application for Symbian^3 and Symbian^4, so supplying good bug reports now will help out everyone in the long run.

We'd also like to thank the Podcatcher project team for including the All About Symbian Insight podcast as one of their out of the box subscriptions :-)
