Ovi Maps (free navigation) hits the Nokia N97

Despite expectations that Ovi Maps 3.3 with free navigation would hit the Nokia N97 in a firmware update, it has popped up on Software Update (in the Applications folder) anyway as a 8MB download. Obviously, it's not recommended if you're starting off with less than about 30MB of free space on disk C: - in which case, you're better off waiting for it in a firmware release. Do please comment if you spot this for another Nokia phone that wasn't previously covered!
I can't emphasise enough how much disk space this will occupy. With the other updates for the N97 firmware (e.g. in the above list) this will cause huge problems for some people. Only install the updates that are essential. Right about now, I reckon, Nokia are firing the guy who original specified the memory side of the Nokia N97 (classic) - if he wasn't fired some time ago.... 8-)

Interesting advance by Nokia. That tells me that the firmware update has probably been delayed and they are trying to avoid the fallout! :redface:
After a recent WSOD (well, 2 days ago) I reformatted and noticed that I had 56MB free on C drive so have put the N97 mini version on for testing. Works well, but I can see how to the non tech user this update is not going to install because of space limitation.
I expect the guy responsible for the C drive kept his job by coming back with the N97 mini. :rolleyes:

Note to the wise: If you have the beta version of Ovi Maps installed, uninstall it first. Mine wouldn't install until I removed it.

It would not surprise me if the person responsible for the lack of ram on the N97 got reassigned elsewhere. Seriously how much money could they really save by adding a a few more megs when the devices ships with 32gigs on E drive.

Installed and working fine. But same lame GPS feature that doesn't use Internet as an AP for A-GPS... so every time I change my SIM from Airtel (India) to TMO or ATT (USA) I have to redefine things... really lame.

@phazlehurst: That's forced by the technology - Internet would imply a group that was topped by Wi-Fi, but Assisted GPS needs a cellular connection so that the cell tower location can be added into the 'grabbing ephemeris data' mix.

The the C: drive is hard set in the chip, whilst E: connects via a slower bus to expansion RAM then Nokia can only tweak the software to get a few more MB. A difficult one to wriggle out of I would guess.
It's not like you can just open the case and just shove in a couple of new DIMMS.

As far as I'm informed:
The 32GB E: drive is a slow external eMMC drive.
Whereas the 256MB? C: drive is a nandflash drive, which is fast, but quite expensive.

I installed the n97 mini version on my n97 classic when it first came out, runs great, compass seems stable, and gps is quick as. Just wondering, what are the ramifications of low amounts of c: space? I've got about 22 megs left now, but have never had any problems with running out of space, and have heaps of apps installed (I always use mass storage where possible). I do NOT use email on the device, so maybe that is where most folk are running into trouble? are these hard coded to c:?

Could any one tell me why since I updated to v 20, my Software update client always says “all applications are up-to-dated”?

the AP that is created in the app is classified as packet data. so u can instruct AGPS to use the new AP for AGPS :)
and before any of u out there say this doesnt work, i m using it on my nokia n78 and i get a TTFF in under 5 sec

Just wanted to share that the AGPS finally works for me. This is a big plus. Although no where near as fast as Googlemaps, at least i can get positioned.

Downloaded yesterday. It worked fine. The cold lock without AGPS has been surprisingly fast. No problems during the use while I was driving.
About the memory, I started from about 43 MB and now I have about 30 MB but I did not notice any slowdown.
I think this is a great added value...

Hi Can any body who has used ovi maps and google maps to great extent can tell me what is the difference between them.
I have used only google maps.
1. You have option to put favorites for particular locations that are important to you.
2. Without net also if you have the maps in your cache you can utilise GPS very well.

Don't buy that steve... this AP is just for saying here's the coords 123,123, 123 from the GPS,... tell me where the hell is that.
But either way, even if you did use Internet, they could ignore Wifi...
This is a lame feature EOS.

Loaded onto N97 last night tried it out today in north London. Works very well. Near instant GPS lock, very accurate directions and the "surfer dude" voice will get really on my nerves.

hmmm something's not right :/ when i open the sw updater application there is no option to update ovi maps... how it is possible? it's unbranded version, with newest sw (20.0.019). how do i get my free licence then? did anyone have similiar problem?

I have checked updates both on my phone via the menu and via software updater on my pC and I get no new software result in both places. My software version is 12.2.024. Should a USA version N97 have a 20.X.XXX software available? Are any other US ersion N97 owners able to get Ovi maps nav through software updater?

OK, they made the firmware/software update available to my code of the N97 but Ovi Maps 3.03 was not part of it. I'm not lost nor is there anywhere I need to go that I can't find w/o use of Ovi Maps but.........................

Just for your information, i've got free navigation on my n95 with maps v2.0. I'm in switzerland it the moment, if that makes any difference. I've been reading these articles, slightly frustrated by the fact that the n95 hasn't got free navigation yet, and thought i'd have a play with it....
I loaded maps, connected to my wireless network...&...it will allow me to do "walk to" or "drive to" routes, i've been able to download voice navigation, and have the option to download traffic info, all free.....not sure what i've stumbled upon, but if it helps someone else then great!
