S60 Calculator about to be revamped

icon

I can't really believe I'm writing a news story about Calculator, but it's so ubiquitous and built-in to well over 100 million S60 handsets, so.... News from Nokia Conversations is that Calculator is about to get replaced - by a ported version of the Calculator in Nokia's even-bigger-selling Series 40 handsets. The update should appear first in Beta Labs for us all to try, apparently.

Find On A Map gets an 'Internal GPS' update

icon

FOAM, or Find On A Map, the mobile phone tracking system that works on all S60 smartphones, has just had a big update, the version on the main FOAM web site now supports the internal GPS of the Nokia N95, N82 and E90 (etc), plus there have been several major web site-side functionality improvements since our review last year, including location alarms and 'geofencing'. The optional donation is now more of an enforced donation, but it's still incredibly cheap for what it provides, keeping track of your entire family or workforce to within GPS accuracy.

Leopard on your smartphone

icon

Heck, maybe I should just start a PiZero fan club or something - his latest theme is Leopard (yes, that Leopard) - see below for a majestic screenshot taken on the Nokia E90. The theme wasn't really designed for such a wide screen, but it looks like it can adapt to anything!

Steve's Navigation Weekend of Frustrating Freebies

icon

This is 2008 and, being away from home, I wanted to revisit some of the free satellite navigation applications that I'd previously played with over a year ago - surely one of them had developed into something that could get me home? Or is successful real time navigation still the preserve of the commercial applications like Nokia Maps, Wayfinder, CoPilot, etc.? Here's my attempt to find my way home using amAze, Nav4All and Google Maps for Mobile...

Trivopaedia 2008

icon

I know quite a few of you rely on my definitive pub-quiz-helper, Trivopaedia. It's now been brought up to 2008 levels, with up to date stats for v2.3 . It's available in Mobipocket reader and iSilo formats (i.e. compatible with any portable device or any platform), in addition to being fully online as well - and of course it's still free.

S60 Summit's Top Gear: Ewan Reports on the Shaker Racer

icon

One of the most well received projects in the demo area of the S60 Summit at Barcelona this week was Shaker Racer - a radio controlled truck using not the regular RC sticks, but the accelerometers in a Blue-tooth-connected S60 handset. I had to find out more, in our special video report.

Get Your Balls Rolling in Marble Maze

icon

Steve takes a look at Marble Maze, the latest game to make use of the accelerometers in the latest Nseries devices. The principle is easy enough, tilt your phone to roll the marble around the maze to reach the end while avoiding the holes, but is the 21st century version a rival to the classic wooden real world original?
