Admittedly it's not a huge list, but I've at least made a decent start at compiling a UIQ 3 version of my 3-Lib No Nags tables of freeware. If you can add to the list (not too much generic Java stuff, please) of software for the Sony Ericsson P990i et al, get in touch.
Ex-PDA refugees who are still struggling with the relatively limited feature set of S60's Calendar might like to note that Calendar-replacement Papyrus has just scored another major release. There will be an official review along shortly from Ewan, too, watch this space.
The S60 world's favourite utility, Screenshot, is now officially Symbian Signed and has an extra shortcut key, at long last. Is 2.45 the definitive version?
TomeRaider, a fabulous reference/database tool from the PDA world is now available for beta test, apparently, for S60 3rd Edition. Or would be if it would install - email the developers and we're sure this app will eventually make it fully onto S60. Via Shaun.
Ewan and Steve have been busy reviewing the lastest games from ZingMagic for S60 3rd Edition such as the Nokia N73. Steve has been looking at BlokBlitz, a breakout clone on steroids. Ewan, meanwhile has been playing the block/gem matching puzzler GemMagic. Both games live up to ZingMagic's high development standards although both have room for improvement.
The number one request I hear from new users of S60 3rd Edition devices is for a better Calendar, something which the Papyrus project aims to fix. There's a major new version (1.2.04) just released and worth trying if Calendar is a frustration for you. There'll be a big, formal review along at some point too...
Following the release of Search, thanks to Daniel for pointing us towards Nokia's release of a new WLAN Wizard for S60 3rd Edition. Although it doesn't do much more than the WLAN bit of the existing Connection Manager, it has a shortcut through to Web and so should help new users get online through Wi-Fi more quickly.
Steve's been busy digging around the Symbian Platform Security issues to come up with a plain english guide to the scary world of application installation, signing and security (PlatSec). If phrases like self-signed, malware and Symbian Signed bring you out in a rash, this could be the best place to start.
Nokia's official Podcasting utility for S60 3rd Edition has been formally released, it's now a big fat v1.0. Here's the main download and here's the blog entry with details of how to preserve already downloaded content and settings when upgrading from a beta copy... Thanks, Darla.
Yes, I know it's a slow news week, which is why we're streaming in a bigger than usual quota of original content. Here Ewan reviews the brand new and very shiny PicoBlogger for S60 3rd Edition (and also for 2nd Edition devices). Summary? Very Web 2.0 and very effective.
Steve's been driving around with the very latest version of TomTom's satellite navigation application for (most) S60 3rd Edition smartphones. Here's the full review.
Now that hard resetting a S60 smartphone is next to impossible, what do you do about your Calendar when it's time to pass the device on to someone else? The people behind Papyrus have come up with a dedicated (and free) Calendar-clearing utility, reports E61Life.
