Still trying to breath a little life into Series 90, the interface used in the Symbian OS-based Nokia 7710, I've compiled a directory of freeware for it. Not, err... such a long list in the end, although I'll bet there's something you might want to grab. Comments (and additions) welcome!
Although technically already announced to developers, S60.com has put up a pretty page (and detailed PDF) looking at not only S60 3rd Edition, but S60 3rd Edition Feature Pack 1 (come on, keep up at the back), featuring built-in support for Firmware upgrades Over The Air (FOTA) - woohoo! This only apples to S60 3.1 (3rd Edition Feature Pack 1). Current devices can not be upgraded to 3.1
Nokia has released (to the global open source software community) the source code for S60 WebKit, the engine for its next-gen Web Browser for S60, as featured in all 3rd Edition smartphones. Press release below the break...
TomTom, developers of the MOBILE 5 satellite navigation software for all Symbian platforms, havs brought out a special Plus! pack aimed at football fans travelling into Germany for the World Cup, with POIs, voices and map themes. I think it's all fully MOBILE 5 compatible - anyone care to try it and report back?
Nokia has released two white papers (illustrated guides) helping you create content for the Flash Lite runtime in the new generation of S60 3rd edition smartphones. Here are the PDF links for the overview/intro and style guide.
At long last, the respected mobile musings found in the Carnival of the Mobilists have found a home. Here you'll find links each week to the Carnival, plus archives and FAQs for anyone wanting to write for (or host) the Carnival. Good stuff.
Forgive another pointer to my 'Calculate your perfect smartphone' Grid, but a Javascript error was spotted, meaning that neither 3rd party software not Cost was being included in the final scores. You might want to try the grid again when you've got 5 minutes to spare...
Nokia has licensed Synergenix's reworked Golf Pro Contest (you may remember that their S60 2nd Edition version was a favourite of Rafe and myself) game for their Eseries smartphones. Here, for example, is the E61 download page. Screenshots below the break (no pun intended!)
Researching the DVB-H pilots, I spotted that there's now a flash video of the upcoming N92 in action on Nokia's main Mobile TV web site. Lots of other interesting articles to peruse too, if you're interested in how all this is actually going to work.
Darla's got the scoop on the relaunch of S60.com, the main Series 60/S60 platform site. Actual content in most of the two new prime areas, 'In your life' and 'Doing business' seems very light at the moment, it's very much aimed at S60 beginners, although there's a big push towards selling third party applications from the NSM. What do you think of the new site?
Just received a press release from WizMySite, attached. Essentially it's a web-hosted info, audio and video gallery whose main point is that, in addition to giving others standard web access to your stuff, it also automatically provides an XHTML version for viewing on smartphones.
Just in case you miss these, there are some great promo and blog videos here (make sure you're on broadband, obviously). Plenty of 3rd edition device clues, with seemingly the whole of the N-Gage game back catalogue about to be available on all 3rd edition smartphones. Plenty of sequences involving over-the-air trials and purchase, multi-player gaming, and so on. Set aside an hour and have fun watching.
I just stumbled across the Nokia NseriesCast, apparently a video podcast shot entirely on a Nokia Nseries smartphone. Only thing is, the web page is all in German and the dialogue might even be in Finnish. Can you help shed light on this? Please comment!
