Interesting post over at Engadget Mobile with loads of pictures of upcoming smartphones running N-Gage games, along with the glamour of Nokia's huge booth at the E3 games event.
Interesting article here on a new classification for electronic devices (thanks to the Carnival for the link), though I don't think either 'Communications and control devices' or PCD will catch on. (Nor will Nokia's 'Multimedia Computer', come to that) As in my previous editorial, I think 'phone' will remain the popular term, with the term encompassing all current feature phones, smartphones and connected PDAs.
Programme 9 of the video podcast, the Smartphones Show, is now live, with a 10 minute video review of the Nokia N91 music smartphone as its central feature. The Smartphones Show plays on all PCs, Macs and modern smartphones/PSPs/iPods. Do you want to watch now?
Nokia's N-Gage team have started a blog from the E3 gaming event. Lots of news and photos from upcoming titles as the event unfolds. Hopefully. Our own Ewan will be here with an editorial on the latest N-Gage plans shortly... (Via S60 Multimedia)
Fascinating stuff, even if it'll be a year or so before anything actually appears. Microsoft just announced a multi-platform extension to their gaming platform. Live Anywhere is interesting in that S60 is mentioned as one of the possible target platforms. Microsoft developing for Symbian? Whatever next?...
Symbian has formally welcomed BT into its Platinum Program. A useful alliance, no doubt, the full press release follows, with quotes from both parties.
PC Suite's been updated again for all modern Nokia smartphones. It's still marked as v6.8, but with a date of 4th May 2006. Fixes include some for installation problems, faster music conversion and a simplified sync interface. Thanks to the S60 Multimedia blog for the heads-up.
So I've been fiddling with the scores in my (now rather huge) Grid, plus I've added the Nokia E61. Which is the perfect mobile solution for you? For me, it came up with the Nokia N70, with i-Mate K-JAM as runner up. Interesting stuff, hopefully!
We must have missed this at the time but better late than never with the news. There's a whole new release of the one essential S60 utility, FExplorer. 1.16beta adds (among other things) an 'Open with' function, copying of locked files, the choice to hide system or hidden files and optional faster display of folders using built-in icons.
The Nokia N80 'multimedia computer' (editorial coming on that particular term!) has been voted the Best Mobile Imaging Device in Europe 2006 by the Technical Image Press Association (TIPA), the largest photo and imaging press association in Europe. Full press release follows...
Not to be confused with my own Smartphones Show (see how I slipped that little plug in?), I've spotted hard dates for Symbian's annual (free) Smartphone Show. It's on 17th and 18th of October and is highly recommended. Almost as highly recommended as the annual AllAboutSymbian meet, which will be the evening before (i.e. the 16th) in Central London. Details to follow!
So summer seems to have arrived in the UK and it's a slow news day. In the meantime, Rafe's off to the USA for Orange Partner Camp, Ewan's been busy playing with his Nokia E61 and promoting unsigned music bands on national radio, and I've been trying to extend my big comparison table of Series 60 hardware - except that I've still got more question marks than I'd like - can you help fill in any of the blanks?
Opera has announced Opera Mobile 8.60, their native browser for S60 smartphones, which is now compatible with S60 3rd Edition devices such as the Nokia 3250, N91, etc. Highlights of 8.60 include auto-completion for URL entry, password manager for easy logins, improved smooth scrolling, a new skin and the ability to read and bookmark newsfeeds. Full press release after the break...
