There's an interesting analysis of the mobile digital TV wars over on Open Gardens, where Ajit has obviously gone all out to try and win a Carnival of the Mobilists prize! His conclusion? Both formats will win!
It's that time of the month again. I've updated the all-encompassing Grid again, this time with tweaked figures for the E61 and an all-new entry, the Nokia N80. Enter your preferences and let the Grid calculate the right device for you... Why not post the results in the Comments here?
Keeping up spirits in the long, long wait for the Sony Ericsson P990i, broadband users might like to watch the new P990i promo video. While you're there, they've also put up a (shorter) promo for the W950i, also running UIQ 3. And, just to be complete, here's the promo video for the M600i, still sporting a broken screen, alas(!)
It's true that I've only had the Nokia E61 for a couple of weeks, but I've had a first stab at an E61 Tips page over on 3-Lib. If you've found any handy shortcuts or tips, please add them in Comments. Rafe will be along soon with a more advanced E61 tips round-up here on AAS.
Wayfinder have released the first beta of their alternative to Google Local for Mobile, Wayfinder Earth. It's compatible with most S60 2nd Edition and UIQ 2.1 phones. Features include map global browsing and zooming, find by location name, and favourite location store (bookmarks). Read on for more.
Over at 3-Lib, I've updated and reworked my comprehensive comparison of all S60 phones, past and present. A quick way to check on device specs, a handy bookmark in your browser and a nostalgia fix for smartphones of old...
That's right, it can only be... SlovoEd, that scourgeXXXXX err... centrepiece of Symbian OS software listings, is now available for all S60 3rd Edition devices. SlovoEd is a dictionary engine and there around 100 different language-to-language variants.
Although this is basically yet another Sudoku game (yawn...) 'Number Puzzle' is interesting in that Nokia have licensed it and are giving it away free for all registered S60 2nd Edition users on their s60.com site. It's worth the download, anyway.
There's another DVB-H mobile TV pilot scheme going at the moment, in the four biggest German cities (home of the World Cup, of course), using the Nokia N92, rather than the 7710, as previously in schemes across the world. Press release follows.
I must have fallen asleep in the S60 world somewhere around the introduction of the Nokia 6630, as it seems S60 2nd Edition FP2 onwards contains a nifty way of backing up all contacts to vCard format (and an extra to mass copy them from one device to another). Well, it was news to me! See S60Tips.com for the details. Nice one, Antony.
Smartphones Show 11 is now available, with a 12 minute video review of the Nokia N71 clamshell smartphone, plus a round-up of mobile golf games. The Smartphones Show is a video podcast and playable on PC, Mac, S60v2 FP3-onwards smartphone, iPod or PSP.
According to Expansys, you can order the Sony Ericsson M600i UIQ 3 music smartphone today and it'll be shipped in 4 working days. Let's hope the P990i isn't far behind (Expansys quotes 'Early July' for this).
