Rafe previews the Nokia 6290 (in video/audio this time!) and I review the Nokia E60, a plain looking business smartphone that packs more of a punch than most company buyers will suspect. It's all in AAS video podcast 4.
Rafe Blandford had to chance to test the new 6290 recently. Here's his detailed preview, with lots of photos. Summary: a very capable and attractive clamshell smartphone at a surprisingly low price.
Nokia have publicly said that Nokia Software Updates to the N93, down since November 3rd, will remain suspended until 'early 2007'. This is due to technical issues with using NSU with the next-gen N93 processor, apparently. The new v20.0.058 firmware is now well established at all main Nokia service centres though*.
Thanks to E61Life for pointing us towards a series of posts on The Creative Life, in which they compare video footage from the Nokia N93 with that from a Canon MV630i camcorder. Rather impressively, the N93 won convincingly, in the first 'good light' tests, at least.
Never mind GPRS, 3G, Wi-Max, etc. The comms technology we're all waiting for is now officially Ultra Mobile Broadband, which maxes out at an utterly staggering 280Mbps, or almost three hundred times the speed of the average home broadband. You'll have to wait at least three years though..... (via GeekZone)
AllAboutSymbian audio podcast 7 is now online, in which Ewan interviews Brian Jaquet from Slingmedia - how does his streaming TV Slingbox concept work?
Now this is the best smartphone to receive for Christmas. Only 100g and isn't platform-locked or SIM-locked. And it's only 15 Euros... If anyone out there wants to buy a gift for a certain someone on the AAS editorial team...
We don't normally link to outrageous rumours, but in this case there are too many to ignore, all in the one post, over on Esato. Specifically, possible successors to the UIQ 3 W950, P990 and M600..... Mind you, they're only rumours, folks!
These crazy Russians. One chap has decided to put the Nokia 5500's ruggedised pretensions to the test by vacuuming it up, washing it, soaking it in milk, dropping it from a great height and then running over it in a car. And er.... it still worked. Not bad, Nokia!
Nokia has now put up its official N95 product page on the Nseries site, with animations, spotlights and full technical specifications. And the good news is that it's still scheduled to arrive within the next 3 months.
I've been adding to and fleshing out my original Nokia N93 'TV out' showcase - see the revised 'Powerhouse in your pocket' feature. And, of course, everything mentioned in this piece will now also apply in equal measure to the upcoming N95 and other top-end future Nseries devices.
Nokia's Jaakko Kaidesoja gave a very interesting interview to Pocket Gamer at the Nokia World event. Apparently, there will be between five and seven S60 3rd Edition smartphones which will support Nokia's Next Gen gaming platform when it launches next year, presumably with that number expanding after the launch as even newer models appear. Here's the interesting bit though: "Some of (the smartphones) are already being sold today ... if you have one of those devices, you'll just have to go to our website, download the application to your phone." Frustratingly however, he declines to say which models these are. (Thanks to Symbian Freak for pointing this story out!)
