Symbian supremo David Wood's new blog continues to pop up some interesting entries. Here, he talks about this week's Mobile Monday event, focussed on a topic close to my heart, 'Enabling Location in Applications', with relevant links and quotes. I was particularly interested to see the high profile of Skyhook's Wi-Fi location system, something which had hit my radar earlier in the week.
As Ewan puts it, it's another madcap show - All About Symbian Insight number 30 right here, in which we talk about Missing Sync for Symbian, the launch of the Nokia E71 and E66, plus first thoughts on the Motorola MOTO Z10. Note that this show was recorded last Thursday and so predates Tuesday's Symbian announcements - we'll bring you audio content to do with this very shortly.
My review of the Nokia E71, after a week with a production device, still left a few questions in the air, apparently. Rounding up everybody's comments so far, I've attempted (below) to try and answer all the questions about the E71, with Rafe (who also has a production device) pitching in to help. [Heavily updated - again]
Six hours to go. Nokia are holding a big business-focussed launch today in London and Rafe and I will be here doing interviews and capturing video and photos. We're expecting two new Eseries phones and I'll be publishing an exhaustive review of one of them immediately. Doubtless there will be more than just devices though - watch AAS throughout the day for more.
If you're subscribed to the All About Symbian audio podcasts (and if not, why not?), you'll have heard a final report from the recent S60 Summit at Barcelona, in which Ewan Spence chats with Mikko Rontynen, from Nokia's Customer Spearhead Project, on a wide range of issues in the world of S60. To listen directly, here's the page for AAS podcast number 78.
As part of last week's S60 Summit, S60's Saara Bergstrom - who now runs The Voice of S60 podcast - sat down with our very own Rafe and Ewan to chat about the event, the platform and the smartphone world in general. Here are the MP3 and eAAC+ links for you to grab and listen to.
Think you missed out by not being invited to the S60 Summit? Are you interested in the whys and hows of how the smartphone industry works and where it's going? Then check out Rafe's comprehensive slide gallery from the two days in Barcelona, complete with comments as appropriate. More content from the Summit to follow....
At the Summit today, S60 has announced the opening of its 'Ambassador' web site. The Ambassador program aims to harness enthusiasm for S60 among early adopters, promising 'freebies' (not devices, but general 'swag') in exchange for signing up. With news and software leads flowing out to 'Word of Mouth' ambassadors and with reports on good and bad experiences with S60 smartphones coming in from people on the street, it's potentially a win for all parties.
Wednesday morning sees the start of the S60 Summit in Barcelona, with Rafe and Ewan in attendance, more from them as it happens. See below, though, for photos and information on so-new-it's-almost-vapour Nokia N100 - the ultimate S60 smartphone? Plus my thoughts on Nokia's design strategies - maybe some of these will be taken on board by the manufacturers represented at the summit?
Yesterday at Where 2.0, Nokia announced Maps on Ovi, a Web component designed to to complement Nokia Maps 2.0. As part of the Ovi brand, Maps on Ovi will allow users to plan their trips on their desktop and then synchronize (automatically or manually) it with their smartphones. Conversely, if you're already out on the road, you can record routes and points of interest on your handset and then upload them to the Ovi service when you return home to share with family and friends. More details and a screenshot below. Comments welcome!
These N-Gage promotions seem to be appearing thick and fast! This one is very simple and easy to enter though: just play any Gameloft N-Gage game (Asphalt 3, Brain Challenge, Block Breaker Deluxe) on your N-Gage phone (currently N81, N82, N95 and variants) and upload at least one score to the Arena before the 18th of May 2008. Everyone who does this is automatically entered into a draw for a range of prizes.
Nokia are giving away FIFA08 for N-Gage-compatible phones absolutely free to a limited number of people in Europe (we don't know the exact figure but it's in the thousands at least). It's on a first-come-first-served basis, so the quicker you act the more likely you are to get the game free. The most reliable way of getting the game free is to install the FIFA08 demo directly on your phone in the N-Gage application, then go to the special N-Gage Play site (play.n-gage.com) on your computer's browser to get the activation link sent to your N-Gage phone as a text message. When the message arrives, just click on its link to activate the game. UPDATE:If you couldn't get it activated on the mobile site, try again through the PC site!(via Symbian Web Blog)
The official N-Gage blog has announced that third party publisher Gameloft will be answering your questions at a future event. You can submit the questions by posting in the reply section of this N-Gage blog post. Questions can cover anything, including their current games and future plans for supporting N-Gage, or you can ask about other mobile platforms as well.
