Open software as a must for industry growth
Heikki Norta (SVP Corporate Strategy Nokia) spoke about the importance of open software. There was particular emphasis on how Ovi would help enable contextual Internet services and experiences.

SDF (Samsung Developer Forum) will use Symbian Signed. This makes one of the key advantages of Symbian Signed more apparent. It is unified across the Symbian ecosystem and therefore it means that there is not fragmentation in certification.

Technology Leaders
Ukko Lappalainen (VP Category Management, Nseries) talked about the profile of Nseries customers and how Nokia is learning from them. Nokia identifies Nseries users as Technology Leaders and estimates there are about 200m such users.

This slide shows how standard services get 100% penetration (Nseries: voice, music, camera, navigation), but other functions (future tech) is emerging too.
Changes from 2005 - 2007
Key changes include the growth of Music and Streaming (fast growth) and slower growth for navigation. Email may have limited penetration, but the frequency with which it used is increasing.
Mobile web moves away from operators

Lee Williams (SVP, S60 Software, Nokia) spoke about using the Internet to extend innovation. Essentially it was how the hot trends of mobile and web can converge on S60 and drive future innovation.

The next version of WRT (Web Run Time) will be able to access multiple services on the phone including location, contacts and calendar.

Forum Nokia invited several developers up on stage to show case their offerings.
Hava
One of these demo applications was HAVA which allows you to watch your home TV on your phone. It got the biggest round of applause of the S60 Summit.
Plumso
The widget pushing continued with Plumso (Krishna Vedati, CEO) who argued that the widget economy opens new pathways. It allows greater use of the free, ad-supported model.
Adobe
Adobe (Matt Millar) seeks to innovate in two areas - within web browsing and within stand alone apps.
Cross device, cross platform
Adobe's Open Screen project will see more services like FineTune (available on the web (Flash), desktop (Air) and mobile (Flash Lite) because it re-engineers Adobe's strategy to focus on enabling easier cross platform development. Cross-platform should be a consideration from the get-go, not a later extension.
Sucessful UX
Esa Eerola spoke on sucessful user experience and argued that total user experience consists of many components including device interaction, software intelligence etc.

What is sucessful depends on what the objective is. Both these calculators will be better for some groups than others. Therefore flexible application design is very important.

Importance of OS
David Wood talked about how the OS is a very important part of improving usability. He described how the current user segment (early adopters) was relatively tolerant of bad usability, but early and late majorities were much less forgiving.
Usability
How making something useful and usable add up to great user experience. Making a device do a few things well is easy, but making it do lots of useful things well is hard. The iPhone does well in usability terms because it is limited in what it can do. Typical high end Symbian phones do many more things, but may do them less well in usability terms.

Symbian is addressing performance in specific areas by co-operating across the full software value chain.

Importance of simplicity
Symbian OS through FreePlay, ScreenPlay and other areas like SMP is seeking to create simplicity for the end users (e.g. don't ask about data bearer - just do it). Making smart middleware that already knows what the user wants will be important, but we need enabling technology provided by the OS in order to achieve this. What seems simple (e.g. battery life) can be technically complex.
Scalability
The scalability of Symbian OS is very important because it enables a very broad portfolio of devices.
