Confirmation of Reduced Games Target

The original N-Gage launch in October 2003 saw Nokia announce a target of 100 MMC Games by Dec 2004. Those of you watching our N-Gage Games Database will realise that if you add up all the titles, we've only got 45 announced or available by Dec 2004. Nokia have confirmed at Nokai Connections 2004 that the current target is now 40 games for Dec 2004 (Reuters).

New Nokia 6260 folding Series 60

Nokia have announced the 6260 as a part of their new Series 60 lineup. The phone is a flip design, a first for a Series 60 from Nokia, and includes a VGA camera, support for VPN networks and MMC card support. The flip design has several modes one of which is for the also announced Nokia wireless keyboard.

New Nokia 6630 3G Smartphone

Nokia have announced the 6630 at their Nokia Connection Event. The phone works on 3G (WCDMA), EDGE and GSM networks. It includes a 1 MP camera. It has 74 MB of memory in standard configuration and MMC card support.

Good and bad news from Nokia: Strong Series 60 moves. Two new Series 60 devices, 6260 with flip, due Q3 2004; 6630 (Charlie) WCDMA, EDGE, or old-school GSM/GRPRS, due Q4 2004; Bluetooth keyboard only works with latest devices (7610, 6630, 6260); Significant Series 60 improvements - more resolutions, QWERTY keyboard, WCDMA, CDMA, IP-SEC and VPN support, 3D and SVG graphics. Bad news, very muted on 7700 which appear to have slipped to being a technology demonstrator, and the 9500 appears to be drifting into the enterprise wilderness.

New: PowerCar and CallCheater from Symbianware

Symbianware have recently announced the availability of two new programs for Series 60 phones. CallCheater enables you to have an artificial background sound when making a call to make it seem that you are somewehere you are not. PowerCar is a fully featured program for keeping track of mileage, petrol and other expenses.

Improved Symbian GCC

The Symbian GCC Improvement Team from the University of Szeged have modified the official Symbian build of GCC so that it will produce code compatible with and better than the official Symbian build.Krste has just tried a version of GoBoy compiled with the improved GCC build and there were visible improvements.Thanks to Akos Kiss for great work on GCC and to Snobile for their build of Goboy.Lets hope the developers will take advantage of the improved GCC tools.

Opera Release "Mobile Accelerator"

Opera have announced a proxy based service for reducing the size of web pages. The Opera Mobile Accelerator will scrunch down pages, images and scripts before sending them to your phone, thus reducing your GPRS usage by (on average)50%-70%. A 14 day free trial is available, then you subscribe monthly.

Porting Series 60 C++ to Series 80/90/UIQ C++

Peroon R&D and Symbian have announced the extension of it's Porting Technology to allow Series 60 C++ Source Code to be compiled and run nativly on Series 80 and Series 90 devices. IT already allows S60 porting to UIQ. This will NOT allow Series 60 apps to run on new devices, but it will make the authors job of porting the code a lot easier.
