It's no surprise that we do a lot of writing here at All About Symbian, so now that Prime has been released for UIQ, I can retire the battered rhyming sddictionary application on my Psion 5mx and find words that sound a bit like other words on my P900. Nice one Shadowplay.
With interesting timing, given my editorial (above), Nokia has launched a new, free mobile search tool, as detailed here, in the 6630/6680 forum. The new tool aims to simplify searching on a mobile device by providing it as an application service. Search functions include web and images (via Yahoo) and it also includes 'local search' functionality in select countries (Yell in the UK).
With Documents to Go and Road Sync, Dataviz have some of the most impressive apps for the mobile office worker on Symbian. Symbian One have a ncie profile about the company over on their website.
Steve Litchfield looks at a trend that started with the Psion palmtop, continues today with cutting edge Symbian smartphones and will end with true Internet-centric devices. Read on...
Fresh from Nokia and partners, this post in the forums gives you the latest link(s). Highlights? Snowboard 3D, once you get past the fact that it's written in Java... and dare we mention it works fine on the 6630 as well?
Ah yes, we're goig to keep the line alive by changing the colour. A marketing trick that sometimes works and keeps things going (see Nintendo's Gameboy Pokemon editions), or points out that nothing is actually happening hardware was (see the same Pokemon edition but not through rose tinted lenses). The reaction to Nokia's announcement of a silver N-Gage is pretty typical - it's a nice thing to see but nothing has really changed. It's due out in September.
SplashData's SpalshID is being offered as a free client on your Series 60 phone. SplashData are obviously hoping that enough people using the secure databank app will purchase the desktop companion to amke the exercise worthwhile. Looking at the marketplace, I think they may be right.
It might be another "alarms based on Cell Tower ID numbers" application, but Geominder looks to have a nice interface with lots of pretty pictures. Well the underlying code on all these apps must be similar so its all in the presentation now. See if you agree.
OK, so it's a slow news week (isn't everybody off at the beach?), but AllAboutSymbian is now showing up with a Google Page Rank of 7. This might not sound very impressive, but it's darned hard to achieve. (It took me 11 years to get enough content and genuine return links to get 3-Lib to PR7 and Rafe and Ewan have done it for AllAboutSymbian in around 3!) Thanks to everybody that continues to visit and recommend AAS!
Erik's finally found a SuDoKu app on his mobile that matches his exacting standards, and it's the version from ZingMagic. It's available for S60, S80 and UIQ phones, and Erik's UIQ review of SuDoKu is here.
No real surprises in the changes to Nokia's Board. Jorma Ollila is standing down as CEO but will remain on the board as a Chairman. Olli-Pekka Kallasvuo (the current COO) willstep up to fill the CEO role from within the ranks of Nokia. A solid move, although nothing startling, which should keep Nokia stable as it moves forward.
