UIQ has announced the availability of the first public software development kit (SDK) for UIQ 3. This announcement conincides with Sony Ericsson's announcement of the P990 (which will be the first UIQ 3 phone to the market). A public download will be available on October 26th, but the first 500 people to sign up for UIQ's new development program, at UIQ booth at the Smartpone Show, will obtain a preview copy.
Sony Ericsson today unveiled the P990, the follow up to the sucessful P910. The P990, running on Symbian OS 9 and UIQ 3 features a QVGA (240 x 320 pixels with 262k colours) touchscreen, flip down keyboard, a 2 Megapixel camera (with auto-focus and camera light) on the back and a front VGA camera for video calling, FM Radio, 80 MB internal memory, Memory Stick Pro Duo expansion slot, and triband GSM, UTMS (3G), USB (for charging and PC connectivity) Bluetooth and Wifi (80.211b) connectivity. It weighs in at 155g and it's dimenisons are 114 x 57 x 25.
A downloadable demo of Catan for N-Gage has just been made available on N-Gage.com. Catan, pubilshed by Capcom, is a strategy game based on the extremely popular German board game "Siedler Von Catan" which has sold over 10 million copies worldwide. The full Catan N-Gage game went on sale earlier this month.

Long time tech book publisher O'Reilly moves into the Symbian space with Nokia Smartphone Hacks. Ewan's reviewed the book, and while it's full of useful info, the American focus and inclusion of Series 40 feel a bit strange in a Symbian targeted book.
Crystaix's puzzle game, JewelRumble for Series 60, has had a minor update to version 1.2.1. Internet high score tables and addictive modes of gameplay mean it's worth having a look at this java title.
In a 'belt and braces' move, Nokia has signed a licensing deal with Symantec to preload the latter's anti-virus software onto (unspecified) future smartphones. Read more...

Just a note that the only serious producer of themes for the Nokia 7710 has moved 'house' and is now hosted on my 3-Lib server. There are three free themes and a lot of other commercial ones.
