Review: Alpha Wave

icon

Are you feeling protective, but that you need some space in your life? Then you might be the ideal candidate play Alpha Wave, and protect our moon base from that impending meteor shower. Yes, that meteor shower, up there! We love classic game genres and Alpha Wave seems to be taking on two at once, by combining Space Invaders with Asteroids. Read on to find out how well the combination works.

Review: Autumn Dynasty

Real time strategy (RTS) games can be a lot of fun, if you like that kind of thing. Sometimes though, you don't want to be bogged down by all the facts and figures that are often involved. Is creating an RTS game that strips away all the number crunching and technicalities possible? That's what the TD development team have tried to do with Autumn Dynasty. Read on to find out just how well it works.

Review: Powerboat Challenge 3D

icon

One of the coolest characteristics of the best car driving games is when they allow you to 'drift' around corners, effectively controlled skidding. If you agree then you may well enjoy this aquatic equivalent, with Powerboat Challenge 3D providing the ultimate in slippery turns. With over a dozen different courses to race in a variety of race types and with slick visuals, this game has got a lot going for it.

Review: Paper Plane

icon

Time to break open the oldie game ideas from Lunasoft as they ask "how long can you keep your toy paper plane flying through the air, avoiding the obstacles in your path?" This is a simple idea that's been addictive (for me) in other versions. How does Paper Plane compare?

Review: Vampires vs Werewolves

icon

Putting aside the targetting of this game at the Twilight generation (I remember when Robert Pattinson was Christopher Lee, now there was an actor), Vampires vs Werewolves is a little strategy game with Hammer Horror style plotting, but a hugely rewarding tactical style. Read on for my review of the game on the Nokia N8.

Review: Farm Frenzy 2

We reviewed Alawar's Farm Frenzy last year. Well, the farmyard madness is back with Farm Frenzy 2. Sequels are always difficult to get right though. If you're a mobile gamer looking for a frenzied challenge of screen bashing and resource management, with a dash of cuteness; then you should read on to find out more!

Review: Bang! The Spaghetti Western Card Game

icon

Card games have long been a staple of computer game developers, which has always seemed a strange mix because the physical nature of the cards never translates well to the computer screen. But then neither does the mess or the space needed for a really good card game translate either, and that's a good thing! So here's another card game, converted over to Symbian. And the unusual thing here is that it's not based on the standard 52 playing cards. Bang! is a subtly different beast.

Review: Lafix

icon

Following on from the huge disappointment of Pipe Mania, Lafix has popped up as my salve. It’s a very basic salve, and for me that just adds to the charm, but it does what it sets out to do (be a great little puzzle game) and is hopefully one of the first titles by Jeti to grace the Symbian platform. Yes there’s room for improvement, but unlike Pipe Mania, Lafix has the core gameplay sorted out, and made that attractive enough to keep you coming despite the flaws.

Review: Mobile Darts

icon

I've long been a fan of sports simulations, bringing outdoor games and activities into the virtual world of your always-with-you smartphone. So, even if you're stuck on a train or just lying in bed, you can still go driving, for example, whether in a car or on the golf range(!) Mobile Darts aims to take that most unathletic of sports and bring it in similar virtual form into Symbian smartphones. Which it does, at the expense of introducing an unexpected level of ability frustration...

Review: Speedball 2 Evolution

icon

Ah, Speedball 2. It's a name that is spoken of in reverential terms, because of the impact that it had on the computer gaming world in the late 80s and 90s. Now two of the original Bitmap Brothers, as part of Tower Studios, have updated the classic futuristic sports game for Symbian. Have they captured enough of the spirit of the original to make Brutal Deluxe a watchword for smartphone fun? Let's find out.
