We don't normally mention software for Windows Mobile devices, but this little gem is worth pointing out (thanks, Richard). Kai's Auto Soft Reset is a scheduling macro for Windows Mobile that will reset your device once every 24 hours to "keep it running smoothly." Discuss...
Opera has come to an agreement with Google that they will become the 'default partner' for their mobile internet browsers, with heavy integration of Google in the home screen of the browser. Is this going ot be enough to kill off the rumours of a Redmond/Oslo courtship? Didn't think so!
Steve Litchfield is surprised by the speed and efficiency of Roadmap of Great Britain for the Nokia Communicator (9210/9300/9500). An alternative to the voice-guided navigator that's distinctly handy to keep on your MMC. Steve also looks at the London street map sister product (for both the Communicator and S60). Here's the review.
Darla's spotted yet another outbreak of buck-chasing virus paranoia, this time from AhnLab. Read on for some priceless marketing quotes. And if you're worried about the threat of mobile malware then don't be. Read on...
To celebrate the Christmas holiday period, Symbian Themes has removed their 20 file per day limit, giving unlimited downloads of all their content for the 25th and 26th December. Happy holidays from the Symbian Themes team!
Rafe, Ewan and Steve each pick out their top 5 Series 60 games in this special Christmas selection. Whether you agree or not with their favourites, we're sure you'll pick up an idea or two to keep you entertained over the Holidays.
Providing a massive feature set (including filtering, multi-list views, contact merging, and both public and private notes), DreamConnect looks to be great add-on utility for UIQ users. Lots of UI work in how the thumb wheel can be used to do more than just scroll is one point that caught my eye.
Who remembers Nebulus, a game rightly hailed as brilliant when first released in 1987? Well it's back, thanks to Telcogames. Coded in C++ for S60 and Symbian OS, the original gameplay, animation and bonuses are all present. And congrats also to Telcogmaes for releasing this into the retail channel as well as to the networks. We don't all want to wait for our portal to decide if Nebulus is for us. Hardcore Gamers already know...
Steve Litchfield's discovered that Opera Mini's now alive and working and has been playing with it for a couple of days. Here's his review. Summary: it may change the way you browse on your smartphone - it will certainly chop your GPRS bill down to size...
AAS's own Arjen Broeze has come up with a utility to create Nokia 9500 or 9300 skins from scratch or by editing existing ones. It can also automatically generate all needed graphics from a single master image, install and activate skins without the need to reboot, and automatically install Desk and cover phone wallpapers. And we can't resist mentioning that this was all written in OPL. Nice one, Arjen!
Ewan goes in search of an Internet Relay Chat client that will work on all his Symbian smartphones and finds it in the free JmIRC. Here's the full review.
The url http://m.gmail.com/ shows that even the decision on the namespace is right - Google's Gmail service now has a web based mail interface for small screen devices. While POP3 access has always been available, it has never been 100% reliable. While you'll still need to watch the data charges from your carrier, it should be no problem for any mobile web browser to get your mail.
Thunderhawk, a web browser previously available on the Windows Mobile platform is now available for S60. Features include a unique split screen mode which divides the screen in two and allows for easier reading and page navigation and wider standard support. Thunderhawk enters an already competitive marketplace with both Opera and Netfront as contenders to replace your built in browser.
Steve Litchfield puts WMAPlus! through its paces and concludes that it's a welcome step towards Media Player compatibility, but that it needs serious work on its stability.
