Martin Sauter is hosting this week's Carnival of the Mobilists, plenty of good reading, as always, especially Michael Mace's piece on Nokia's plans to reinvent itself (and some of the comments).
Engadget's normally best known for its street-savvy news takes, but in this case Chris Ziegler earns an AAS Link Of Interest for his most excellent, balanced appraisal of the Nokia N75 clamshell. Also check out MobileBurn's Nokia N75 review. The N75 is only available in the USA, remember, so we're unlikely to see a review unit, but these reviews are so good that I don't think another review is really needed.
Yet another warning for users of S60 2nd Edition devices from F-Secure, reports Symbian Freak, with the twist that this time there's a financial angle. As usual, the malware poses as a utility on a file sharing site, so that the user accepts the installation prompts, etc. Just steer clear, and stick to downloads from reputable sites like, oh, off the top of my head, AllAboutSymbian...
Another week, another free VoIP client - ho hum. This time it's from Nokia themselves though, which is good, but only currently 'compatible' with the N80 IE and N95, strangely. Gizmo can be grabbed from Nokia Beta Labs here.
It's great to see DVB-H finally making an official (as opposed to 'trial') appearance in the mainstream, in this case major cities in Finland. Jukka from the S60 blogs has offered to show it off on the Nokia N77 in the upcoming Helsinki meet.
Thanks to WOM World for pointing out an interesting four-way VoIP solution comparison over on Laptop Magazine's site, reviewing Nimbuzz, Fring, Talkster and Barablu.
Interesting post over on 'See Into S60' about the ultra convergence typified in the 'Boo Hoo for You' video, worrying that with so many security and ID-related functions built-in, losing your smartphone or having it fail might be catastrophic. Read on for the link and my thoughts...
OK, this has started to get silly. Despite a degree in physics, I can't get my head around how this is possible. Samsung have now announced an 8GB microSD card. Given the minute size of microSD, the technology has started to get seriously jaw-dropping. Not that we couldn't all think of ways to use 8GB, of course. Comments and suggestions welcome!
S60.com give away licensed third party games and utilities regularly. This month it's a S60 3rd Edition 'world time' screen saver. Log in to S60.com and go to 'My exclusives', as usual.
As mentioned in Symbian's Q1 figures more than 20 million phones running on Symbian OS have now been shipped in Japan (that's around 16% of total Symbian shipments). There's an amusing, 'Boo Hoo for You', cartoon available on YouTube (embedded in the full story) celebrating this milestone. Two cartoon characters remind us that Japan remains the cutting edge market - smellphones, biometrics and mobile wallets are all the rage!
The UIQ 3-running Motorola MOTORIZR Z8 is definitely the Symbian OS smartphone that we at AAS want to get our hands on next. Gizmodo were at Motorola's conference a couple of days ago and videoed some of the main Z8 animated slideshows. Good stuff and in many ways this will give the Nokia N95 a run for its money (thanks, Stefan).
Well, I was just about to launch into my own review of Nokia's BH-501 stereo Bluetooth headset, but I see AAS friend, S60.com's Phil got there first. And I pretty much agree with his findings. Great gadget but there are occasional cutouts...
Smartphones Show 32 is 'up', here in MP4 format and here on YouTube, featuring a video review of the budget Nokia 6290 smartphone and a rant on buying unlocked versus locked smartphones.
This week it's the turn of Xellular Identity to do the roundup of the latest posts, thoughts and editorial in the mobile world from around the internet, that make up the Carnival of Mobilists.
