20 Million Symbian Phones in Japan

As mentioned in Symbian's Q1 figures more than 20 million phones running on Symbian OS have now been shipped in Japan (that's around 16% of total Symbian shipments). There's an amusing, 'Boo Hoo for You', cartoon available on YouTube (embedded in the full story) celebrating this milestone. Two cartoon characters remind us that Japan remains the cutting edge market - smellphones, biometrics and mobile wallets are all the rage!

On a more serious note the 20 million figure is significant as it shows how Symbian has continued to do well in a mature market. 

In Japan Symbian's major mobile software platform competitor is Linux, but contrary to some analysts expectations it has managed to compete effectively (Symbian retains the largest market share in Japan). This perhaps points to the way of the future in other markets, although it is important to realise there are differences between Japan and other markets.
