Convergence.... but only up to a point

Interesting post over on 'See Into S60' about the ultra convergence typified in the 'Boo Hoo for You' video, worrying that with so many security and ID-related functions built-in, losing your smartphone or having it fail might be catastrophic. Read on for the link and my thoughts...

Here's the blog post: http://blogs.s60.com/seeintos60/2007/05/convergence_a_single_point_of.html

I wholeheartedly agree. I've been known as a convergence fan for a while, glorying in the gradual integration of music, GPS, camera, camcorder, and so on. But these are simply 'box-saving' measures. They save you having to carry around more than one gadget. But many of the other 'Boo Hoo for You' examples are functions which can be equally well carried out by a plastic card or piece of paper in your wallet or pocket, taking up little room and weighing next to nothing.

At the moment, if I lost my smartphone, I'd be unable to check email, make calls, take pictures, and so on. But I'd still be able to buy travel or cinema tickets, prove who I was, and so on. There comes a point where convergence is starting to merge in technologies which really shouldn't be converged, for exactly the reasons put forward in the See into S60 post.

The location of this point has been up for debate for several years, of course. And no doubt some of these extra functions will be subsumed into (or duplicated in, at least) the humble 'phone'. But there are surely a huge number of extra factors and scenarios to be taken into account before we all go down the 'Boo for You' road taken in Japan.
