You'll have noticed from the prize table at the AAS pub meet that we were fans of Proporta's Mobile Device Charger. It seems that we're not the only ones. It just got voted Best Accessory at the PDA Essentials Awards 2007 in the BAFTA Theatre in London. Oh, and here's my original review.
Like many others, I've been on 1 hour 'refresh' on Nokia Software Update for what seems like weeks now. But the Nokia E90 update seems to have arrived and it's installing as I write this. Version number is 7.40.1.2 and [updated] I've listed the main changes below.
Six weeks ago, I previewed the upcoming O2/Apple iPhone, putting it head to head with the upcoming Nokia N95 8GB. Now that I've had the latter for over a week, it's been time to revise my initial head to head. For completeness, if this is a comparison that you're interested in, here's the N95 8GB vs iPhone page to read/print/link to...
You may remember that Ewan McGregor and Charley Boorman did a motorbike ride from the tip of Scotland to the bottom of South Africa, sponsored by Nokia and with them supposedly using the 6110 Navigator to get them there (and not a fully kitted out film and support crew)? The series starts on the BBC tonight at 9pm, so enjoy and remember to count your 6110 sightings!
SanDisk has started shipping 8GB versions of its microSD and M2 cards, for the current generation of S60 3rd Edition and UIQ 3-powered smartphones, taking possible capacity of these devices to 8GB while maintaining the flexibility to swap cards or transfer data in this way. MyMemory, (e.g.) have these coming soon at £60 inc VAT)
With the rise and rise in YouTube video, is another nail knocked in the coffin of the digital mobile TV? With the Nokia N92 that never arrived and with the N77 still yet to put in an appearance in most countries, what does the future hold for phone-borne video? What will be the limiting factors and which technology will dominate? Some Friday musings below, comments welcome!
For completeness, S60 fans should note that I've updated my reasonably comprehensive S60 smartphone reference to include the new Samsung devices, as well as the Nokia 5700 XpressMusic and a new GPS column. As usual, if you can help fill in any of the remaining blanks....
Is the Nokia N95 8GB the best smartphone ever made? There's an awful lot to it, including some features which don't yet rise to their potential, plus a number of potential pitfalls, but on balance no other 'phone' ever created comes close. Within the limits of the QVGA screen and numeric keypad form factor, the '8GB' takes it to the limit in almost every department. Here's my illustrated Nokia N95 8GB review.
Hot on the heels of the Nokia N95 8GB shipping news comes the followup announcement for the Nokia N81 8GB (with more of a gaming focus and dedicated game/music keys). Full press release below - we've got no less than three N81s on order from various sources and will bring you a full review ASAP.
Thanks to the people that emailed in about the new firmware 7.38.0.2 (with A-GPS) for the Nokia E90, but it seems that this might be an interim release in a few markets, it certainly doesn't appear on NSU in the UK. Also, my sources tell me that the official new firmware will be 7.40.0.2 - all intriguing, watch this space!
It's here, it's Black and it's very, very 'Bad'. And it's a production Nokia N95 8GB, not a prototype - this is the real deal. Read on for loads of close-up photos, plus screenshots and observations of this new, blisteringly fast stunner (Updated)
Also on Symbian's stand at the Smartphone Show was this video demo of the new Demand Paging feature in Symbian OS 9.3 and above. Among other things shown was a dramatic reduction in RAM requirements for most apps and well over 30MB free RAM on the testbed vanilla Nokia N95. See below for the embedded video.
