FB-4 today announced the availability of Symbian SoftLock, which will (and I quote) "prevent virus intrusions and malicious code from attacking mobile phones" through "On-Board, real-time, on access and on demand scanning... The overall effectiveness of our technology is ensured by the combined strength of our detection, heuristic and emulation algorithms, and by frequent updates to the virus signature databases." We'll leave the counting of Symbian viruses out there (as opposed to badly programmed beta versions of apps) as an exercise for the reader.
Johan Frank has updated Quirc to 1.01. Quirc is an IRC client for UIQ. The program is opensource GPL and now moves out of its beta phase. The program allows you to chat, send and receive files on any IRC nework.
Mobile SSH is a SSH program for UIQ enbaling you to remote control any SSH enabled computer. Features include bookmarking sessions, xterm emulation, SSH-2 protocol, and a full screen mode.
Epocware have released HandyExplorer for UIQ Devices. With tabbed views for tree tirectory views, individual file view, find files, quick access control panel and a recycle bin to recover deleted data, HandyExplorer could quickly become the interface for users wanting to get down and dirty with the File System on their phone
The Python for UIQ project (which is nothing to do with the Nokia Series 60 effort... yet) has been updated,, to allow for easier SIS based installation on your UIQ phone. It's still console based, so you'll need an IrDA or BT Keyboard to do anything on the phone, but it works great it on the WINS SDK. Based on Python 2.3.3, it's hoped the next release will use the latest Python 2.3.4 build.
Soldier Ants, by Tom Cooper of SmartMobileGames, pitches up to four teams of Ants against each other in a cartoon 2-D enviroment, with a choice of weapons (from small arms fire to homing missiles). This doesn't sound familiar at all, but looks gorgeous.
Cyberon VoiceCommander is a program which allows you to control your UIQ phone using your voice. It allows you to call contacts specifying home or office, view appointments and more - all with your voice.
A certificate which enables you to install Symbain Signed applications on to your Sony Ericsson UIQ phone is now available. Symbian Signed is a central Signing (testing) program for Symbian phones. The signing means that the application has passed the test criteria and is digitally signed to guarantee the source and integrity of the application. The P900 and newer phones have the certificate preinstalled by the manufacturer.
RMRExpense and RMRDiet have been released by RMR Software. Designed for the financial and physical sides of your life, these programs have proved popular on a number of PDA platforms, so it's great to see them on UIQ (Free OPL Runtime required).
Jonty Lovell has announced Piano Keys. This program implements a 4 octave plus piano keyboard. Press a key and the sound plays. Now all you Pianists need never be without your Piano. Also useful for other musicians for tuning.
S-Tris is a tetris clone for UIQ from Elements Interactive. The game features customisable controls and increasing level difficulty as well as the classic Tetris gameplay.
PacMunchi is a PacMan clone for the P900. You can control the man using the stylus or the jog dial. The game has multiple levels with increasing difficulty and has the classic PacMan gameplay.
VITO Technology has announced an update of its powerful contact manager for SonyEricsson P800/P900 phones. VITO QuickContact version 4.15 allows to backup and restore all your contacts which is useful if you reset your phone. It keeps categories and pictures, so you won't need to classify your contacts again.
Symbianware have updated their GPS navigation program to version 2 and added an impressive array of features. Intended for use with a Bluetooth GPS the program allows you to view information being received by the GPS unit such as location, direction of travel, speed, altitude and more. Furthermore the program will keep a record of points allowsing 'tracks' to be viewed (a record of where you've been). With accompanying PC software you can create maps that you can then track your progress on. PowerNavigation is a highly flexible GPS map program.
