I was most interested to hear Andrew Orlowski's comments on the Nokia E90 Communicator in last week's podcast, but felt that I just had to jump and defend what dubbed the 'Cargo Cult' communicator. Here's my analysis of the E90's interface and raison d'être...
Krisse has the scoop and the review on the Nokia 6120 Classic (and its 6121 stablemate) - the smallest and lightest smartphone in the world, and with the lowest S60 3rd Edition launch price so far. Is this amazing value for money, or cheap and nasty? Oh, and Krisse also launches a brand new unit of smartphone size comparisons - the AEM...
We've tried not to overdo the iPhone coverage and comparisons, but I couldn't resist linking to Paul Whitaker's nicely done mini-movie, shot on the N95, as he and a friend stalk the line of iPhone 'waiters'...
After numerous (ok, four) emails, and looking ahead to Proporta's up and coming holster for the Nokia E90, below the break you'll find some exclusive photos. The case will be available in a week or so, I believe.
Following up his high profile piece on Psion, midweek over at The Register, Ewan caught up with long time Technology correspondent Andrew Orlowski in a London bar to talk about the article, and to go into a bit more depth on the topics raised. Ewan also wanted to find out what Andrew thought this meant for Symbian and the current smartphone market. And how could today not be complete with touching on the launch of the Apple iPhone in the USA? All this in AAS podcast number 27.
How could the latest Smartphones Show not include relevancy to the iPhone and try to get in first? - this is 'iDay' after all(!) So, with a truck load of Symbian news, a one minute(!) review of the Apple iPhone and a feature on things existing S60 users can learn from the iPhone's simplicity. Smartphones Show 36 is here in MP4 format, here on YouTube.
The fourth edition of the Greenpeace Guide to Greener Electronics is out now, with Nokia regaining top place as a result of phasing out PVC and meeting or exceeding a wide set of Greenpeace benchmarks, designed to reduce the amount and toxicity of electronic waste piling up in Asia and Africa.
Krisse unboxes the Nokia 6120 Classic - at 66cc, it's probably the most compact smartphone in the world! There'll be a full review to follow at some point soon. If you have any questions, please post them in the comments section.
Steve looks at the technology behind assisted GPS (A-GPS) and describes how it can be used to speed up lock on times before asking what potential benefits there are for a smartphone that always knows where it is.
In AAS podcast 26, Rafe takes a look at the announcement of the Sony Ericsson W960 Walkman device, with comparisons to the upcoming iPhone, Steve decides that discretion is the better part of valour when it comes to casing a smartphone, while Ewan brings up the latest scam on the streets as people seek to get more money out of mobile phone theft. Oh, those crazy err..... New Zealanders. Over in the GeekZone forums, one guy has hacked (literally) into one of the Nokia N95's circuit boards, as a way to stop the red (privacy) LED from activating when recording video. Call me mad, but the only way anyone's going to prise my N95 apart is an authorised technician if the thing goes wrong...
