In a vote of confidence in S60's built-in IM (Instant Messaging) client, the Symbian Blog bites the bullet, sets it up and finds that it works well with the major IM hosts (Yahoo, ICQ, MSN & AIM). If, like me, you've always assumed you had to go third party, this might be a nice surprise.
The folks at MobileBurn have snagged themselves a production Nokia N76 and review it in reasonable depth. The good: it's sleek and with the usual S60 degree of 'smart'ness. The bad: only a 700mAh battery, a hiss on music playback and a 3.5mm audio jack location that fouls the flip lid... And yes, we're enquiring after a review N76 of our own....
AAS reader Abbas Reza emailed in with some eloquent opinions on the comparison between the Nokia N95 and E90, perhaps the two converged devices of the moment. Steve enters into the debate and then Rafe ties things up at the end. Presenting N95 vs E90: your Wednesday morning read...
Over at the New Yorker, they have a video presentation made at their conference "2012: Stories From The Near Future." It's from Nokia's Insight and Innovation team; in it Younghee Jung talks about what we can expect from Nokia's future phones. A nice talk for your next coffee break.
locr is a photo hosting service with a geographical tilt. It encourages its users to geotag (encode location information) into their photos. Last week locr announced the availability of an S60 client which allows you to geotag photos on your phone (S60 2nd and 3rd Edition). We'll be covering geotagging in more detail later this week.
Seemingly designed for Nokia Nseries owners from the Far East and Australia, the Nokia Owners page has a couple of exclusive themes, plus a handful of mid-size tutorial articles. At least that's what popped up when I registered with my N95's details. Please comment if you spot other content when registering with other devices.
In this editorial feature, Steve details a day in the life of his E90 Communicator. Not only does he demonstrate the versatility of the device, giving some practical examples of the uses to which you can put an E90, he also illustrates the sort of battery life you can expect in real world usage. Summary: 1500mAh goes quite a bit further than the 950mAh of the N95's battery, despite the extra display size and RAM...
Surely, I thought, gazing at the Nokia N95 on my desk. Surely, its camera can't really be as bad as I and other 'power users' have been making it? Indeed it's not, and it's all due to a bug in the N95 firmware.... read on below!
To see one of the more colourful moments of Symbian's history, take a look at this Chinese music video featuring the Nokia 5700 ...if you dare. Is that Confucius doing a cameo?
In the (ahem, rather short) AAS video podcast 15, I demonstrate 8 ways to play music from a Nokia N95. If you can think of others, please comment! (You can watch in the page itself, download in MP4 format or subscribe via RSS.)
Nokia's Mark Ollila, one of their Games executives, is to give a speech at the Game Developers Conference China 2007, which will presumably mention their upcoming Next Gen N-Gage Games Platform that's due to open its doors to various S60 3rd Edition devices this September. GDC China takes place from 27th to 29th August in Shanghai, so it's possibly just a few days before the launch of the new platform.
Smartphones Show 33, now live and on YouTube, has a hands-on review of the WinMob-powered HTC S710, plus a video feature looking at ten things current smartphones can do that the otherwise cool Apple iPhone can't. The ten are demo-ed on current S60 3rd Edition hardware, but many also apply to other Symbian OS-powered devices.
