Ever wondered what that little RSS logo with the letters RSS means on our website? Or for that matter on a lot of the other websites that you browse through? Or maybe you do know what it stands for and want to know what feeds we have? Then look no further.
The Wonderful World of RSS
Really Simple Syndication (or Rich Site Summary, depending on who you ask) was changed the way a lot of people read websites. Now it's possible to read a websites content without actually visiting the site. RSS feeds (small files written at the same time as news and articles are posted) can be ready by dedicated programs, and presented to the reader in much the same way as an email client or Usenet News Reader. But the best way to start off with is a website called Bloglines, a free web based RSS client you log into with your email address. You can then build up your list of RSS Feeds, simply by clicking on a link button you can add to your browser.
Spotting sites that have feeds.
As with everything in the computing world, nobody can agree on a common format, so the term RSS actually covers three formats: .rss (v0.9), .xml/rdf (v1.0) and (v2.0) and Atom. All About Symbian provides all our feeds in the RSS and XML flavours. Just choose one of them for your RSS reader and let it do the rest. There's a number of RSS Readers out there, so let's point out a few of them.
If you're looking for a dedicated reader on your PC, then look no further than Feed Demon (http://www.feeddemon.com/). It's gone through a highly public beta program, and is one of the most mature RSS readers out there. Mac users can point themselves at the equally splendid RSS Reader in the Thunderbird browser. Series 60 owners can have a look at WildPalm's HeadLine, which provides a RSS Reader on their phone. UIQ users are best looking at doHeadlines, while 92x0 users will find that Bloglines mobile version (http://www.bloglines.com/mobile/) is just as good on a mobile device as it is on your desktop PC.
All About Symbian's RSS Feeds
We've got a wide range of feeds to choose form, so you only need to read the news that you want to read. Just right click these links and copy them into your RSS Reader - they all link directly to the relevant feed as described. Our main feed, which will give you all the content that goes on the front page of the main site can be found here (rss, xml, atom). You can pick up a feed that's specific to your phone, so you've get only the news that you want (and none of those pesky N-Gage articles). Getting Started Really Quickly
The main All About Symbian feeds are shared in Bloglines. If you point your browser at http://www.bloglines.com/public/allaboutsymbian and you can then copy these into your own Bloglines account. Alternativly, you can use this OPML file of the All About Symbian main feeds.
