Prologue

Aaaah Steel Warrior the mystery award winning game. Every big 9210 site has the entry Steel Warrior in their software archives, a fabulous game which won some big award and then just disappeared . I never got a chance to see what the fuss was all about, only version still available of this mystery game is a windows port :s
And now Steel Warrior 2 :) You must to admit it looks promising; the sequel of a award winner, powered by mgs and the promise of full 30fps 3D action :)
(official source: Handago)
The best N9210 3D game now gets even better! With fantastic 3D graphics and audio performance and incredible smooth animation, you will join Ricky's battles with aliens! You will fly the most advanced craft made by human to fight with those alien invaders. And make the fire of the war towards the deep space! There are 8 totally different levels in this game. From earth sea surface to alien's planet. During playing, you will experience a exciting fancy journey. Flying through the aerolites, fighting on our beautiful earth and deep space. This is the first 3rd-developer-game for MGS from Monkeys On Fire Studio. With the power of MGS, this game will give you the most exciting game experience that you never gain from your phone, full colours 3D animations at over 30FPS!! This game will show you that your phone can be an ultimate game console with the power of MGS. Never miss it!! Demo version can play the first level. Registered usr can play the whole 8 levels and have auto-save capability.

The main startup screen

Speeeeeeeeeeeeed

Speed, speed and more speed :) This is the fastest game available on the 9210 and it's damn proud about it. The whole game is build around the incredible fast 3D action at over 30FPS (50FPS on the 7650 version), shoot first ask later :)
Of course we've heard those things before 'the most beautiful, smooth and fast graphics ever seen; best game ever!' this won't do :p
On startup we get a familiar mgs menu (start, credits, quit) with a extra button called continue. This button 'continue' will only show up if you have a saved game, which requires you to first have played a game and quitted in the middle of it (auto-save) . But since we haven't played before it isn't there ;)

Simon says DIE

Ladies and gentlemen this is your captain speaking, plz decrease your vocabulary to 'Kill, Kill, Kill' as we prepare for takeoff.

As a maniac I start pressing on the spacebar to get me some speed firing until I come to the marvellous discovery that Noumena spared my communicators spacebar by implementing a fire toggle action; in other words, pressing spacebar will switch the automatic firing on and another hit on spacebar will turn it back off ... excellent *evil grin*.
The goal of the game is to blast your way through 8 levels of intense (and I mean INTENSE) alien activity. You are Ricky a lone ranger with 2 spare spaceships equipped with 2 laser cannons and fully charged shields.
It's really hard to describe this game, the best way to describe it is to compare it with the Windows Stars screensaver. Your spaceship is closed to you and you can move it up, down, left and right but you can't go further away. All the objects originate from the middle of the screen (indicating the horizon ;) ) and you need to blow them down before they crash into you.

Level defender of Stage1

Level defender of Stage2

And action

The first level starts off with a few nice alien ships flying by; but don't get to comfortable because the heat is turned on and before you know it you'll be abusing your arrowpad to find some air to breath :)
Because of the way the view is set it's hard to really see how far objects are from your, this makes it even harder to avoid collision. The speed is the winning factor of this game, you won't have time to think and relax, there is just so much action coming your way that you won't get bored an instance.
The speed factor is not always a good thing, like I said the action is sometimes overwhelming; I can imagine myself sitting in the spacecraft closing my eyes, finger on the fire button and just hope that the next light I'll see won't be the one of THE tunnel ;)
The levels are done before your you know it and if they are not; then your life is ;)

How the hell am I going to dodge this?

Level defender of Stage4

To be or not to be, dead

There are 8 levels and only 3 lives, trust me surviving ain't gonna be simple.
On the left side of the screen you'll see a shield indicator which tells you how many hits your vessel can endure before being blowed up. After you are blown up you'll start with you new ship on the same location but you lose all your power-ups which really is a pain in the ass cause you'll definitely will need them.
During the game you'll be able to receive 2 different kinds of power-ups, power-ups originate from blowed up alien spacecraft's and are floating around for you to catch. The power-ups are white with a red letter in them.
The 'P' power-up; the power up with the red P gives you a extra laser canon (max is 5), I also believe this P restores your shield power; I tried to get some prove but the game was to hectic for me to follow :)
The second power up is the one with the red letter 'M', this gives you another mortar (max is 4). A mortar is a autoaiming fireball which you can fire at your enemies, this is also on of the beloved weapons of your enemies.

Powered up to 4 lasers :)

Shoot them as they come

During the game you are faced with a few types of enemies.
The first type is the "I'm just flying here type", these objects are easy to avoid because they are just flying there minding their own business, but beware some of them do shoot mortar's.

The second type are the kamikaze types, these objects come straight after your ass. Some of these can be fired by bigger ships/objects like the bosses.
The third type, level defenders/bosses appear at the end of every level (except Stage 3) to make your life a living hell. Most of them use a combination of Kamikaze objects and mortar's to defend their selves. When you face one of these you'll notice a health indicator above the enemy so you know how much longer you need to hold on.
After you defeated these level defenders you will see some of them again in the next levels but this time not as powerful and without the health indicator.

Stage7, I almost at the end!

Fuck ... guess Stage8 has to wait ... Sorry Ricky ;p

MultiMedia

The best example to describe the graphics is the beginning of Stage 1. Just take some time to enjoy the moving clouds the nice textures and the smooth movement of the ship. No doubt the 30FPS has something to do with these nice graphics. The game angle could have been a little better because it's sometimes hard to know how far objects are removed from you. Maybe it would have been better to use another camera view like a mixture of a top view and this view, so you would be looking half down.
The sound is great as ever and what amazed me is that the sound doesn't have 'lag', most games with this much action and graphic violence like Doom for instance play the sound a instant later then the original event.

Technical

The game requires Magic Game Station to run which requires:

  • storage: approximate 800kb
  • memory: 492kb

the game itself:
  • storage: approximate 1064K
  • memory: approximate 1.6MB (Total)
  • Price:$19.95

Judgement

It's hard to judge this game. For me it was sometimes overwhelming and the levels seem to go by rather quickly but I think that's just the effect of the speed :)
For people who love the action genre this is most certainly a game to check out! I would suggest to try the demo ;)
