I’ve always loved the Worms game on my PC. It was and still is a very addictive and fun game to play, especially with two or more players. So when I heard a Worms-clone had been released for UIQ I got excited! But can it keep up with my high hopes? I got a version to review and here are my thoughts!

Soldier AntsIntroduction

Firstly, a short introduction to this game. I think most of you know the Worms concept already. You have two or more teams of worms (or in this case, ants) trying to kill each other by a great variety of weapons. The first team that gets completely wiped out loses. This game has been a great success on the PC and is very popular. That’s why Soldier Ants has the chance to get (relatively) popular as well!

Here is a list of its features:

  • Multi lingual (English, German, Italian)

  • Predefined teams (e.g. supermodels, presidents), editable

  • Multiplayer (2 to 4 teams), either controlled by people or an AI (with 3 difficulty settings)

  • Single battle and missions

  • Lots of maps (other can be downloaded for free)

My Thoughts

I’ll start with the graphics. I was impressed, they are good. Of course it can’t beat the looks of the PC version, but honestly that wasn’t expected. It operates in landscape mode and looks pretty similar to the original Worms on the PC! It is one of the best graphical games I have seen on the P900 (comparable to V-Rally, although this is a bit more 2D).

The game is a pretty direct clone of Worms and works in a similar way. They had one problem making this clone though; squeezing the controls of the keyboard and the mouse into a touchscreen and a jog-dial. At first the controls did take a lot of getting used to. It is almost completely controlled by the touchscreen. I usually prefer jog-dial control as much as possible, but once I had played it a few times I had no problems operating this game.

The single battle mode is fun, of course, for the occasional one-to-one battle (and for some practice), but could get boring after a while. Fortunately, as I mentioned earlier, they included a mission-mode as well! Basically it means you have a map, and you have to conquer every region displayed. It will take you some time to win them all (especially on a higher difficulty setting) which is good, because you won’t get bored with the game that easily. You can save your progress at any time.

Quite frankly, I couldn’t find any problems, bugs or bad things about this game. However, I would still like to see one more feature. To play against other people over Bluetooth!

Conclusion

This game rocks! It has good graphics, has a lot of features, and most importantly, it's fun to play! And at $/€14.95 it is reasonably priced. I really recommend it, especially if you're already a Worms fan! I give it an 85% score.
