Review: JetEx

One of the great joys in life is getting to the end of the Kevin Costner film The Postman. The post-apocalyptic film is a rather long one, and while it has some great ideas, the idea of rebuilding an entire society and country because the post will always be delivered is one of the most stunning concepts to be made into an "action" film ever. I get the feeling that the arcade game JetEx has enough momentum to fall into that same bucket. You get to the end of the level and you will feel you've accomplished something. And there are 101 levels to get that feeling.

Review: Yacht II

icon

The problem with classic games is that they tend to get overlooked by many because it's been so long since they appeared. Such is the case with ZingMagic's Yacht (i.e. Yahtzee), here in its 'II' implementation, reviewed back by us five years ago on All About Symbian, when the screen size was a brain numbing 176 pixels by 208 - remember? The gameplay's basically identical, but for a classic game this is exactly what you want. And we have improvements in screen resolution and distribution method.

Review: Word Blast

icon

It starts off looking rather familiar - a big grid of tiles, and you can swap over two of them to try and make something. The difference here is that Word Blast is built up around letters and words rather than colours, and that adds a level of complexity to what promises to be an interesting puzzle game.

Review: Glow Air Hockey

icon

I'm surprised there haven't been more attempts at Air Hockey games on touchscreen phones, especially with multi-touch capacitive screens. So Glow Air Hockey from Hyperkani has a pretty open field to rule over. And it still fails.

Review: Revival 2

If you’re an eager explorer, a budding builder, have a penchant for politics, or fancy yourself as a swinging swordsman, then you might just be interested in Revival 2. This is a Civilisation clone, all running within your Symbian phone. It’s a complex game genre, being something of a simulator for early human settlements. It’s an old genre too, with its roots definitely in the DOS era of gaming. Read on to find out how well it translates into the mobile space.

Review: HellCopter

icon

One of the most addictive games I've ever played was on Palm OS. SF Cave was a one button game, where you had to guide a ribbon through a cave with ever increasing complexity. I loved it so much, I coded it for Symbian back in the days of the Nokia 9210 (here it is, scoring a glorious 70). It would be fair to say that HellCopter is from the same mould as SF Cave. Will it soar in my heart, or crash to the ground?

Review: Draw Slasher

icon

Draw Slasher got my attention the second I saw the help screen. Any game that is explained by stating "your village is under attack from Zombie Monkey Pirates" will get a huge thumbs up in my book. Throw in some stylish graphics, a kicking guitar riff, and a control system that has quite a bit of subtlety, and you have a winner. How strong a winner? Stick Don't Stop Me Now on the jukebox and let's find out.

Review: eLiteracy

Learning to spell is something we all have to do. Despite having spell checkers, many editors [hey, that's me, almost a name check! - Ed] will tell you that many of us still need to learn! If you’re the kind of parent that likes to install games for the kids on your smartphone, then one to add to the library might be AppCRAFT’s eLiteracy. It is designed to help kids spell common words, numbers, colours and more.
