Samsung i8510 8GB to be sold by Carphone Warehouse in the UK

Published by Stuart Clark at 14:52 UTC, August 13th 2008

Samsung recently announced the existence of the i8510 (INNOV8) handset and have now revealed that the 8GB version will be sold exclusively in the UK in partnership with the Carphone Warehouse (a similar arrangement to the iPhone), although which networks the phone will be available on has not yet been specified. The i8510 will have two memory variants: 16GB and 8GB, it appears that only the 8GB is a Carphone Warehouse exclusive, with the 16GB version being sold by other retailers and dealers in the UK.

Here's an extract from the press release:

Samsung Electronics UK, the world's second largest mobile phone manufacturer, today announced the launch of the Samsung i8510, which will be available in the UK in partnership with The Carphone Warehouse, early September 2008. This will be the first 8MP camera-phone to launch in the UK market.

"The Samsung i8510 is another milestone in mobile phone technology," said Mark Mitchinson, Vice President of Samsung Mobile UK and Ireland. "Samsung has always produced high-quality camera-phone technology, and to be the first company to launch an 8MP multimedia device in the UK is a proud moment for everyone involved and demonstrates beyond any doubt that Samsung is very much on the ascendancy. The Samsung i8510 offers a staggering array of multimedia technology to enhance and reward the consumers experience at every level."

He continued: "This certainly marks a new era in mobile phone technology and we're excited to be launching the Samsung i8510 in partnership with The Carphone Warehouse."

I'm not sure how Carphone Wharehouse work, but does this mean you can walk in and get this phone on any service provider?
Tzer2
As far as I know the Carphone Warehouse are just a retailer, so you should be able to use the phone on a selection of networks.

Only the 8GB version for UK release??? What is that all about, why not the 16GB??

Man, that is really really disappointing!!!

Look forward to this phone only to be kicked in the family jewels with news like that.

Maybe they thought the 8GB version would sell better as it's cheaper?

Or maybe they want to get the early adopters to buy the 8GB version, then release the 16GB version later to stir up interest again?

Yeah, I understand the marketing (read greedy money making tactics) strategy behind it but it is hardly fair on the UK. The early adopters should be rewarded for their support of Samsung and not punished in the same way the early adopters of the Nokia N95 were.

I was really going to get this phone, no questions, but if its only going to be the 8GB version then I may hold on for a month or so. I hear LG has a new 8mp camera (with DVD video recording resolution) just around the corner and who knows what else is lurking on the not too distant cellular horizon.

When I saw this information on the front page I was pretty excited!
But now, knowing that it will only be the 8GB version I am feeling a bit cheated.

Come on carphone warehouse, make a BIG impact and bring in the 16GB version!

Following up on this, it looks like the "exclusive" will only be for the 8GB version.

Well Carphone can keep their 8GB version. Sensible people will be buying the 16GB from other retailers.

The title of this post is wrong... its not 'Carephone' :) unless you are Irish :)

What is all this misinformation by some posters?

Did you actually read the article?
... it appears that only the 8GB is a Carphone Warehouse exlcusive, with the 16GB version being sold by other retailers / dealers in the UK. ...

So 16GB will be available in the UK, just not with the craphone house. I wouldn't buy from them anyway because their deals are always below par.

Early adopters are ALWAYS "punished" because they're eager to pay far more than anyone else for the worst, most bug-ridden version of a product.

It doesn't matter what it is, phones, consoles, cameras etc, the first version is always the worst and most expensive.

The reason this happens is because early adopters literally queue up to buy devices first, sometimes camping overnight in extreme cases. If early adopters didn't go to such extremes, companies wouldn't start the prices so high, and wouldn't launch early with known bugs.

Personally I think it's crazy to buy anything at its launch, it's just throwing money away on a potentially very shoddy product. If you wait a year you'll be able to get the same thing at a much lower price and with a much more reliable firmware. Of course many people would laugh at the idea of waiting that long, but that's what you have to do if you want companies to avoid milking early adopters.

Almostdone, that part wasn't there in the earlier version of the news item. That's why it says "updated" before it, because they changed the item after it was originally posted.

Could depend on the price difference for the mainstream market, but you may well be right as far as early adopters are concerned.

why is india not high on radar for these smartphones for the manufacturers. This is absolutely not on. Like steve's even my mind was corrupted enough to at least feel this baby properly if not switching from my n 82!

I wish to start a sign up campaign for innov8 and send it to samsung. Get it into india guys!

Hey, I am not with you guys. I couldn't wait for this phone so I took up a contract and got the Samsung Tocco after hearing rave reviews. But these reviewers don't get a chance to spend time with the phones. The Tocco was absolutely rubbish especially the "customising" pitch they are going about. I can go on and on about other features, like each Memo file can only take 100 char. Although features are ideal to some but not others, I believe if the think tanks are rubbish, they will always produce rubbish products. It really makes me reconsider choosing Samsung again.

No offense but where have you been reading your reviews... Soul, Tocco etc has always been rubbish.

This is a different kettle of fish.
