Wayfinder have released the first beta of their alternative to Google Local for Mobile, Wayfinder Earth. It's compatible with most S60 2nd Edition and UIQ 2.1 phones. Features include map global browsing and zooming, find by location name, and favourite location store (bookmarks). Read on for more.

Wayfinder Earth allows you to either browse around a global map (with map data downloaded over the air as you do so) or via a search which lets you enter place names and other information. Specific places can be stored as favourites for quicker retrieval. In the map view you can scroll around the map using the direction keys and zoom in out to different detail levels.

Wayfinder Earth includes global map information with many areas detailed down to street or minor road level. The maps include Point-of-Interest information including contact details. Contact numbers can be called from within the application or stored in the phone's Contacts database. 

Wayfinder Earth is also designed to encourage users to purchase Wayfinder's other map / travel related services including the Wayfinder GPS Routing application. Service upgrades will be offered through the built in mini-store / services feature. Upgrades to Wayfinder Earth may also be offered (e.g. adding location finding via GPS).
