We have already mentioned Nokia's report on the future of media, A Glimpse of the Next Episode, a few times such as with these summary videos. However you can download (in PDF format) some more detailed information from the report including an overview and country specific analysis basis from the Nseries website. Read on for more.
Here are two free UIQ applications that recently caught our eye. Swim is an application which allows you to automatically sync to a SyncML server on a schedule (e.g. every hour). PodcastPlayer is a podcatcher (podcast downloader) for UIQ 3 phones. Both these applications come from the Bergamot project, the aim of which is to release high quality, open source software for the UIQ platform,
It's great to see Symbian and Nokia courting the Japanese and Chinese markets respectively, with S60.com launching its own Chinese-language blog recently. If you're learning (or are fluent in) Chinese, then bookmark it!
The Nokia E90 alone in terms of form factor and specs for so long, is about to acquire a Windows Mobile-powered rival, the Toshiba Portege G910, according to Unwired View . Mind you, I said the same about the i-Mate Ultimate 7150, and look what happened to that...
Mark/Space is planning to bring Missing Sync to the Symbian platform. Missing Sync is a sync solution for Mac OS X users, it allows syncronisation of contacts (Apple Address Book), calendar entries (iCal), photos (iPhoto), videos (Quick Time) and music (iTunes) to and from the phone. The software supports all UIQ 3 and S60 3rd Edition phones and will be made available in Q1 2008.
It's good to see that Nokia's S60 is embracing the potential of video, with tutorials for beginners on their new YouTube channel, looking at Multitasking, Browsing and Downloading. Why not give them some feedback in the YouTube movie comments?
I don't normally link to James Burland's Nokia Creative very often for technical reasons (see below), but you'll want to see the winners in his Nokia N95 photo competition that's been running for a while. As with any other N95 owner, I'm still blown away by what it (and the upcoming N82) can do.
The deal between Sony Ericsson to co-own UIQ Technology, together with Motorola, has received blessing from the European Union and it seems the approval is the last hurdle before the split-ownership begins. With Sony Ericsson's strong UIQ developer community and Motorola's innovative designs, UIQ's future catalogue looks interesting. Time will tell... Full news after the jump.
Forum Nokia, under its Creative Pro brand, are running a series of webinars over the next few days focusing on Flash Lite (first on content and services, second on video capabilities) and Mobile Advertising. This is an area I expect to see a lot of growth in during 2008 and if you are a developer looking for an introduction to these topics the webinars are a good place to start.
As a died in the wool Symbian OS smartphone user, you've probably still wondered what it's like to use a rival phone/smartphone. One novel approach is that by TryPhone, who have put up Flash working demos of the Apple iPhone and BlackBerry Pearl. Quite interesting, and maybe there will be an N95-3 demo for users of other platforms to try in the future?
Software genius Samir must be burning the candle at both ends, with apps coming out of his ears. YTPlayer (new screenshots below) is a first beta of a full YouTube searcher and player. And it works, within the beta limitations. If any programmer is worth a PayPal donation it's this guy. Go on, make his Christmas.
