Never mind the beta status - full YouTube on S60 is now free and a reality

Published by Steve Litchfield at 23:03 GMT, December 12th 2007

Software genius Samir must be burning the candle at both ends, with apps coming out of his ears. YTPlayer  (new screenshots below) is a first beta of a full YouTube searcher and player. And it works, within the beta limitations. If any programmer is worth a PayPal donation it's this guy. Go on, make his Christmas.

The app is packaged as a humble .SWF file at the moment and has to be launched from the Flash Lite 3 shell. Don't let that put you off though. Some screens:

Obviously, it's still very rough, but it shows what can be done and gives full YouTube for the very first time. And it's free and is promised to stay free etc.

Works really well

Just a hint: you can't do two word searches unless you put a * in between the words.

flash version 8 not supported? that is the message i see on my phone

Download and Install Flashlite 3, there is a link on the download page for the YTPlayer.

Then copy YTPlayer to your phone and place it in C:\Data\Others or E:\Others

It won't work with built in Flash Player

Open Flashlite 3 and start YTPlayer

And yes, my apologies for doing the screenshots in a hurry, in portrait mode, but I was excited and forgot to stop and think 8-)

Interestingly, this morning every search string's coming up as 'not found' - something broken at YouTube's end? What about you guys and gals?

Everytype i enter a word to search for on youtube i get "no result found", what am I doing wrong?

Hi all,

Just tried it on my E61 and it is amazing! :)
Realy full screen mode. But I tested a search on the word "crash" and found one hit. I selected it and it showed the movie but there was good sound and good image but I had the feeling that a lot of the movie was cut off (or I just didn't get the fun of the movie...).
Can any of you test this movie on your device?

Thanks,
Wouter

I got my flashlite 3 application emailed to me by Adobe, and it didnt work on that version. Adobe seems to have updated the application before posting it on their website. This program only works on the new flaslite 3 version in the download link.

Thanks Samir!:icon14:

AAAAARRGGHHH!
m.vtap.com
Everything else comes second, no I don't have any dealings with them, it just simply is the best.

And now YouTube works again - wierd.

re:vtap - I've tried this several times but never got it working (over Wi-Fi) 8-(

Kudos to Samir anyway, more power to his keyboard!!!

My N80 can run it, but its a bit to slow. The quality of both video and sound is good, but it's asynchronous.
Jay3gsm
It works on the N82, I've tried one video clip so far, seems to run a bit slow.

vtap is ok but to me nothing beats real youtube. When you search vtap you only find a handful of videos. I've search for many youtube videos on vtap and it's not there! Only some "popular" content is on vtap.

I can't wait for the improvements to come.

We need volume control but this is great start!

'Some popular content'

I'm sorry but that is clearly wrong, the search hits for vtap are better than Youtube, it searchs VideoGoogle, news outlets, Amazon, you can chose the audio only and lets you listen to quality stereo sound.

You tube is 90% crap these days anyway, full of re..re..re..britneys spears t1ts

Volume control is there on the menu 8-)

Steve,

Have you made sure that your RealPlayer connection setting matches that of your Browser connection setting? m.vtap works just great for me, so I would only consider trying this app when it matures quite a bit...

whenever i search for anything i get no resuts? did i miss something?
Aron
Hello!

It seems to work, very nice proof of concept!

Although it does not seem to find Lisa Lavie? Is she banned by the author? :-)

Regards!

ok this has made me really worried about my e90. it works, but is REALLY slow. the sound is fine, but the video renders like its being watched in super slow motion. is this what people are meaning when they say its 'a bit slow'?

thanks,

I finally got it to work with 3G, when you get the screen to select a network, select proxyless instead of MediaNet.

Previously I was getting the no results issue.

UPDATED: This is for ATT phones. N75 specifically.

What about a new S60 freeware YouTube video player? I thinks it's better that YTPlayer? Right?
