Sony Ericsson has announced the winners of its 2007 Content Awards. Congratulations to RealNetworks (Playman Extreme Running) in the games category, BitCycle (Pull Face Image Manipulator) in the Imaging category, Opera (Opera Mini 4.0) in the productivity category, Gracenote (TrackID) in the music category and Clavitones (Geeks themes and graphics) in the graphics category.

Improved Symbian Signed goes live

Symbian has announced the improved version of Symbian Signed, which was revealed at the Smartphone Show, has now launched. Symbian Signed now comes in three flavours: Open Signed (for developer testing), Express Signed (instant online signing for $20) and Certified Signed (broadly similar to the previous iteration). Express Signed significantly lowers the cost of signing for most application developers and should result in more applications being made available.

A Glimpse of the Next Episode - Nokia examines the future

Nokia recently released a press release about a report it had comissioned, 'A Glimpse of the Next Episode' which talked about the future of entertainment. The main trend identified was the coming of 'Circular Entertainment' (content created, edited and shared within a peer community rather than traditional media sources). $25,000 Up For Grabs for Flash Lite Develoeprs

Calling all Flash Lite programmers  - to promote the upcoming launch of the Playyoo Games Portal, they are offering a prize fund of $25,000 (with $10,000 to the winner) for your Flash Lite games. Playyoo  is hoping to be a community destination for players and programmers of mobile games, and rather obviously given the competition based around using Flash Lite.

PHP and MySQL to be added to Raccoon

It has been informally announced that a PHP and MySQL implementation is going to be added to Nokia's Web Server software Raccoon. PHP is an open source scripting language usually used to create dynamic web pages. There will also a number of PHP extension modules that provide access to the core functionality of the phone. Programming your smartphone: Mobile Python

As something of a dabbler in PyS60, Nokia's open source port of the Python programming language to S60, I was excited to see the arrival of a proper book on the subject. "Mobile Python" takes a tutorial approach, leading you from the ubiquitous 'Hello World' right through to phone-controlled robotics and multi-player online games. It's a heady and sometimes uneven ride, but Mobile Python does manage to get across a lot of information while simultaneously firing the imagination of anyone who ever wanted to write an application for their S60 phone.

20.4 million Symbian OS handsets ship in Q3 2007

Symbian today announced its latest set of figures. In Q3 2007 20.4 million Symbian OS handsets were shipped representing 56% year on year growth (13 million in Q3 2006). The total number of Symbian OS handset shipped has now reached 165 million. The average royalty per handset is now $4.80 (down from $5.20 last year following license fee reductions).
