BiTween have just released MailXChange for UIQ powered smartphones. MailXchange (MXC) is an advanced messaging application including support of wireless data synchronization with Microsoft Outlook Express and message rules.
The popular Psion application, RMRUtils, has been ported to UIQ.It provides a fully featured calculator, but also quick and easy conversion between all common and (many, many less common) unit values, such as area, length, energy, speed and volume units, temperature scales, number formats. The program can also calculate dates, journey times, VAT and can suggest lottery numbers. Finally it offers information tables such as ASCII codes, International Paper sizes, International Clothing Sizes and Roman Numerals. The free OPL Runtime is required.
A new version of the popular and award winning Quickoffice Premier is now available. Quickoffice allows for the viewing and editing of Word, Excel and Powerpoint files. There is improved round trip (the ability to preserve file structure and formatting between the PC and phone) support in the new version since the new version edits the native files directly rather than converting then editing. Other new features include the consolidation of the three suite elements into a single program, a redeisgned user interface, table support in Quickword, more editing features in Quickpoint and improved file handling operations.
Wildpalm have released PhotoArt for UIQ devices, and updated PhoneSecure for UIQ. Photoart allows you to alter your camera images and pictures to different tyles of painting styles, while PhoneSecure allows remote locking and barring of the handset by sending a coded SMS message.
Psiloc have recently released Arabic and Hebrew localistions for UIQ. These localisations allow writing and reading in the languages and also converts much of the system specified text make phones more user friendly for these locales.
As the press release says "The UIQ Alliance Partner Program provides an increased choice of UIQ compatible technologies and knowledge that will be introduced to UIQ customers." I'm sure that makes it crystal clear, so I won't need to elaborate on that. First into the Alliance is Decuma, who bring with them chinese and japanese handwriting recognition, along with the usual western characters.
In what could be seen as a sign of the times, the Sony Ericsson Software shop will remove all applications which have not went through the Symbian Signed process of verification. While this has been noted (quietly) to be happening for some months, the fact that a Handset Manufactuer has finally taken this action will get a lot of Operators looking seriously at the idea of locking down phones. Symbian Signing an appliction currently costs in the region of $250 and upwards per installation file, plus a one time registration cost of $350 for the author. Thanks to NewLC for the link.
