You may have heard about Widsets and widgets and the fact that they're something to do with Nokia? Rafe explains all and reviews the current Widsets application. Is it compelling for smartphones or just a way of extending non-Symbian features phones?
Nokia are just about to open their flagship store in the USA, complete with huge LCD and LED panels and hands-on time with cutting edge S60 devices. And the folks from Engadget Mobile were there with a camera - their report is well worth a look, to see what Nokia are doing in the USA.
It's that time of the month again. I've updated the all-encompassing Grid again, this time with tweaked figures for the E61 and an all-new entry, the Nokia N80. Enter your preferences and let the Grid calculate the right device for you... Why not post the results in the Comments here?
Proudly presenting the first AAS Week in Review. Recognising that it's easy to miss a few days and fall behind with what's new on All About Symbian, we're going to do a weekly round-up. If you're really pushed for time, this is the weekly list of articles and links to check out.
OPL (the Open Source Programming Langauge) has been updated for Series 80 owners. The release is mostly bug fixes, and better compatibility for 9300 and 9500 owners, although there are some enhanced commands. Release notes are at the SourceForge page, as are the binaries and source code.
Despite our review from a couple of days ago, you don't need a separate application to keep track of World Cup events online - in this overview, Ewan describes the links to use to get the same information within your browser for an even lower cost in terms of GPRS data.
SymbianWave has announced the availability of Magic Message Manager for Nokia 9300/9500, adding much needed functionality to the built-in Messaging application. It can filter emails, SMS and MMS messages, faxes and beamed files using a variety of options (e.g. sender's name, text in message).
Having seen Nokia's Series 90 interface get subsumed into S60, and with Series 80 seemingly well on the way, I've been busy over at 3-Lib and present my thoughts on what the Nokia Communicator of 2007 will look like. Comments welcome on whether I'm on the ball or way off the mark!
Steve compares the important, but often ignored, metric of standby time between a i-mate JAM (Windows Mobile 5) and a Nokia 9500 (Symbian OS 8). He comes away with an interesting result which may bear on purchase decisions for true mobile warriors.
PC Suite has been tweaked again, for all Nokia smartphones. It's now at 6.8.22 and the changes include security and installation fixes. Bullet point changes below the break... There's also a cool and user-friendly set of Flash animations, most of which are here, to get across its purpose.
The onslaught of major S60 titles ported over to Symbian OS 9 and S60 3rd Edition seems to have started in earnest. With v3.20, the much-recommended SmartMovie is now fully 3rd Edition-compatible, as well as fixing rebooting problems on Series 80 and 90 communicators.
Forgive another pointer to my 'Calculate your perfect smartphone' Grid, but a Javascript error was spotted, meaning that neither 3rd party software not Cost was being included in the final scores. You might want to try the grid again when you've got 5 minutes to spare...
Nokia's PC Suite's come a long way from its humble PsiWin and EPOC Connect ancestry. But come on, installing connectivity software's supposed to be really, really tricky, isn't it? Surely half the fun of PDAs and smartphones is spending hours despairing with your head in your hands?
PC Suite's been updated again for all modern Nokia smartphones. It's still marked as v6.8, but with a date of 4th May 2006. Fixes include some for installation problems, faster music conversion and a simplified sync interface. Thanks to the S60 Multimedia blog for the heads-up.
