Free Navigation options on the N95

Published by Rafe Blandford at 9:48 UTC, August 24th 2007

In this feature on free navigation software Steve rounds up the ways you can find you can get driving directions and instructions on the Nokia N95 and other S60 devices. There is Nokia's Smart2Go (Nokia Maps), of course, but he also covers the Java applications from amaZe, Nav4All, Yahoo and Google.

Once upon a time, if you wanted navigation software you had to pay for it - through the nose. Rightly so, as the raw map data was so expensive. But times have changed and with Microsoft, Google and Yahoo all pushing out street data and aerial photography for free like there's no tomorrow, you won't be surprised to note that there's now an awful lot you can do for free. Here's a roundup of the smartphone-related solutions that are currently free, apart from data charges, but I'm assuming that you've got flat rate data or at least a sensible tariff from your provider.

Note the Java versions will also work on UIQ phones, although not all are optimised for this platfrom.

Thanks for the roundup.

I'm coming to London tomorrow (from Denmark), and so have downloaded maps for England. (Would have liked to be able to choose a smaller region...) But I'm not happy with its routing choices, so I'd like to try the Yahoo solution because of your remark on its routing. I assume it offers tracking. Is it possible to preload its maps and not use the network (at roaming charges)?

And another thing. I am reluctant to upgrade my firmware from v11 to 12 because I think I remember having read that the tracking feature of Maps has been removed. Is that true? I don't need paid navigation as long as a free tracking option exists...

Just been trying J2MEMap and it's got one of the most appallingly designed and unstable interfaces I've ever seen. And then there's the question of it not legally licensing the data it uses, so it could be shut down etc.
