(P)reviewing the Nokia E61i

Published by Steve Litchfield at 16:39 GMT, February 26th 2007

Rafe and Ewan have been living with the upcoming Nokia E61i for almost a week now - here's their preview of this improved variant on the extremely popular E61. What's changed, what's good and who's going to buy it?

Nokia might be well advised to offer two further members of the Eseries thumb keyboard family if they wish to gain broader market appeal. Firstly, a premium version that uses some of the technology from the E90, such as the HSDPA connectivity, auto-focus camera optics and GPS chipset
Yep, that's the one I want to replace my E61 - HSDPA, GPS and FP1 (not fussed about camera improvements personally) would enough to get me to part with the cash. It's disappointing that the E90 and N95 got these but not the E61. Anyone have any idea about how long we'll have to wait?

Marcol, I shouldn't think it will be long, the E61i came out less than a year after the E61 and the E61's sold so well that I'm sure Nokia's working on a proper sequel right now.
marcol
Thanks. I expect you're right. HSDPA and GPS seem like such a natural match for a business device.

So is E61i worth buying? or should i wait for the next update.
Ewan
I think a call on that is very close, as to upgrading. Olets wait till the final release version?

My view:

If you have an E61, probably not much point upgrading unless you really need or want the camera or you hate the joystick.

If you don't have an E61, well it totally depends on your needs and what you have now. If you're totally set on having an S60 device with a permanently exposed QWERTY keyboard there's argument that it might be worth waiting for the E61i rather than getting an E61. Remember though that it might not necessarily be available as a subsidised handset with your operator of choice for quite a while. I think I'm right in saying, for instance, that the E61 wasn't available on T-Mobile UK until four months after release. Of course if you need/want HSDPA or built-in GPS then neither the E61 or E61i will do you and you might be better off with the E90, N95, waiting for whatever comes after the E61i, or even considering a Windows Mobile device.

If you could say what you have now and what your needs are you'd probably get more useful advice.

I've got an original E61 and I'm not going to upgrade because there's not really much of a difference between that and the E61i.

The camera is nice to have, but I already have a more powerful separate camera and I'm not going to lay out €400 just to get a phone one. The d-pad is also nice, I don't like the original E61's joystick, but again it's not worth shelling out money just over that.

If the differences were more substantial it might be worth upgrading, but they're not. The E61i is basically the same as the E61 but with a camera added.

I'd say get an E61i if you're interested in this model, but stick with the E61 if you already have one.

I don't know if inderjeet's messages are spam, the result of a technical glitch, or the posting of a lunatic, but I'm bored with getting the notifications now.

inderjeet, please stop.

The e61 takes a few seconds to load up an email.. has this been improved on the e61i?
Unregistered
It has been asked before but what is the email client shown within the picture and how can we get it?

I've seen from many websites (even the nokia's itself) that E61i have video call feature. Is this correct? I don't see any camera for video call in front of the device.

2mp camera is a joke! has to be better than that since it's a new model...
screen looks pretty alright though.
wonder what sort of weight it is?

Has anyone installed GoodLink on the new E61i yet? Nokia claims its a supported device but its still not listed on GoodLink's site.

Why oh why are the Nokia's E61/2 so slow?

I mean, my brother has an N73, i believe is the same OS, and according to this page: http://3lib.ukonline.co.uk/s60history.htm; they even share the same processor. His Cell phone runs lightning fast, whilst my E62 runs sluggish.

Can you people of AAS enlighten me?

Should we expect the same speed from the E61i?

When are they going to release this series with a better, faster processor?

At the begining, what this platform (S60 3rd edition, Symbian OS 9.1) was missing, was software and 3rd party apps, now, IMNSHO, the only thing missing right now in this phones is Speed.

I don't want to buy another phone... I LOVE Symbian OS. I just want, need more... Speed.

I don't think i am the only want who feel this way.

P.D.: Sorry for my english.
