We've been seeing several of Nokia's beta projects surfacing recently. Now there's a proper home page for them in the shape of Nokia Beta Labs. Worth a regular visit at least, though we'll buzz you here if something great gets launched. Via Tommi.
Nokia has gone widget-mad, introducing full widget (mini-apps built on Ajax and Javascript) support into S60, beginning with S60 3rd Edition Feature Pack 2 (so we're looking at next year for the first devices with full widget support). Widgets will run under 'Web Run-Time', as explained in the full press release, below.
Thanks to Stefan for pointing me towards a couple of interesting videos. Here the TV Out capabilities of the Nokia N95 are demoed well, watching a video on three different screens in one shot, while here one of the developers of VoIP software demonstrates how Internet telephony is 'missing' on branded/locked versions of the N95.
A major new firmware for the Sony Ericsson P990i was released at the start of this week. Organizer version R5A17, with a faster interface, fewer bugs and better RAM use, should be offered when you connect your P990i to Sony Ericsson's Update Service. Any problems or questions, see the forum.
The Nseries team always do a pretty good job on these video promotionals.... This one minute short film, aired on the Nseries Arena blog, demonstrates the Nokia N73, N95 and N80 used to help avoid cooking disasters and to bring a group of friends together for a meal...
It's all very well Apple announcing 100 million iPods sold since the first player hit the market in late 2001, but when you compare it to the mobile arena, where over 80 million smartphone devices with music and video capability were sold in the last tweleve months, you realise that while it might have the zeitgeist, the iPod is quite clearly no longer the top selling family of music devices.
Eagle eyed James has spotted that the Nokia N95 detects whether photos are snapped in portrait or landscape mode - it seems the device has a level sensor! Which begs the question why the general interface and other apps don't use this, of course..... Still, pretty cool.
