To promote N-Gage, Nokia has put up a new interactive gaming site - Get out and Play. The loading screen itself is Breakout, there's a film based on Snake and you can then play Breakout with real people as blocks/paddle/ball. Hmmm.... Comments welcome. (Tzer2 adds: The film is made entirely in stop-motion without any special effects, using 1000 extras to make up the snake at its largest. Everything in the film existed in real life, there's no CGI at all.)
Over on All About N-Gage, we've just published an editorial discussing the release version of the new N-Gage application, looking at where there's room for improvement. There are no major disasters, but somehow the rough edges of the app currently make it feel a bit rickety.
The recent availability of Doom, Wolfenstein and Quake in Symbian-friendly guises got Ewan wondering how easy or hard it would be to get Quake working, in all its majesty, on a Nokia N95. Here's his Quake for S60 tutorial, with appropriate links and tips. Have a blasting weekend, everybody!
Forget all the new fangled brain games, Steve has turned to the classics - Chess. Odesys Chess promises a challenging AI opponent, as well as a strong online multi player environment. Steve is impressed, but not enough to tell us his ranking, in our latest review.
As the new N-Gage platform has finally (and properly) launched, All About N-Gage has updated its Frequently Asked Questions section to answer our readers' most common queries. If you can't find the answer you want in the FAQ, post about it in this item's comments thread and we'll try to get back to you.
The Brain Training genre just got the S60 native seal of approval, with Brain Challenge's appearance in the first flight of games for N-Gage. I was pretty impressed when I tried it out and so was Ewan, who's been putting his Scottish grey matter through the wringer with it since N-Gage went live. Here's his full review of Brain Challenge.
We suspect that the game of refreshing N-Gage's showroom each night may become a regular event. FIFA 08 was added to the show room at the begining of the week. It was part of the initial N-Gage preview client seen from last Autumn, but is now available in full, for real. The full version adds a number of extra options such as on screen tutorials challenges, and the option to play tournaments and full season, but the gameplay remains much the same.
...BUT not for the platform you were expecting. Showing that there's (a tiny bit of) life left in the old S60 2nd Edition platform, here's news of what appears to be a camera-controlled, wireless multiplayer version of Bejewelled - that runs on the likes of the Nokia 6630 and N70. At least there are plans to port it to something more modern.
Ocean Wars is yet another Java game that's popped up recently in Nokia Download! Here's Ewan's take on whether Ocean Wars is worth stumping up for. At first it disappoints in that at heart it's a very old game, but we think there's just enough innovation here to please seafaring gamers.
Those who played and kind of liked some of the older N-Gage First Access games on their N81s (cough.... err.. and other... cough... devices) but are now upset because the N-Gage launch line-up doesn't include Tetris, Space Impact or Block Breaker, might like to look at p@sco's post on the subject.
Turning out to be a busy day! N-Gage just went live. Phew. There's a 7MB .sisx client to install via the usual PC Suite route. Here's the English Download link. (via p@sco). Initial observations, device compatibility and screenshots of the only new game, Brain Challenge, below. All other announced games are still shown as 'coming soon' on the web site. All comments welcome, of course.
Recently added to Nokia's Download! for some devices, Brain Genius is actually widely available for all phones and smartphones. How does this daily mental exercise work and how has it been implemented on the Download! version? Find out in my review of Brain Genius.
Ewan and I look at MosKillto, a new commercial demo of an accelerometer-driven shooting game. In our review, we look past the simple gameplay to appreciate the genre's history and its future. Oh, and add in a flamethrower and some zombies and you've got us hooked...
While in San Francisco last month, Ewan popped in to see N-Gage's 'Ikona'. Here's his exclusive interview with the man who is N-Gage's public 'face'. Find out how he got started with N-Gage, and find out just how important the N-Gage blog now is to Nokia.
