Nokia update PC Suite to 6.8

Ooh, ooh, there's a whole new PC Suite release on the loose, v6.8, with an upgraded Nokia Music Manager, various multimedia related improvements and a simplified interface. Thanks to the S60 Multimedia blog for the heads-up.

S60/S80 PuTTY Updated to v1.4

Looks like we missed this one back in March, but the Open Source SSH client for S60 (including S60 v3), S80 and S90 devices has been updated to v1.4. Download from here, and the Sourceforge homepage is here.

Quicker web info update

For all those occasions where you need quick and cheap web info on your smartphone and it's not covered by RSS subs or other Internet apps, what you need is a bookmarked page of essentially text-only 'useful links'. I've just updated the 3-Lib web guide.

Better, smoother movies

SmartMovie, always a competent (though quirky) video conversion system for Symbian-based devices, has recently embraced the terrific CoreMP4 codec and boasts much better performance. Steve Litchfield reviews the result, tested in this case on the Nokia 9500 and N70.

Smoother, smarter movies

Perhaps stung by criticism of the slow frame rate of previous versions, Lonely Cat Games has released a whole new generation of SmartMovie for all Symbian-based devices, with a new MPEG-4 codec and claims of far better performance, up to 25 frames per second in some cases.

Digital TV on your mobile takes a step closer to mass market

Microsoft has joined the group of industry leaders (including Nokia, Intel, Motorola and TI) in formally backing DVB-H, the already-favourite digital TV standard for smartphones, reports Engadget. You may remember Nokia has been a champion of DVB-H for ages, including trials on their 7710 smartphone in the UK, and with the N92 to come this summer.
