Martin Sauter is hosting this week's Carnival of the Mobilists, plenty of good reading, as always, especially Michael Mace's piece on Nokia's plans to reinvent itself (and some of the comments).
Yet another warning for users of S60 2nd Edition devices from F-Secure, reports Symbian Freak, with the twist that this time there's a financial angle. As usual, the malware poses as a utility on a file sharing site, so that the user accepts the installation prompts, etc. Just steer clear, and stick to downloads from reputable sites like, oh, off the top of my head, AllAboutSymbian...
Nokia Video Manager has been updated to version 1.5 and now supports the direct download of videos. Videos can be downloaded from the web via special links (nvd://) directly into Nokia Video Manager making it easier to get videos on to phones such as the Nokia N95. Metacafe is one site that supports this functionality and we've added it to All About Symbian too. Read on for more.
It's great to see DVB-H finally making an official (as opposed to 'trial') appearance in the mainstream, in this case major cities in Finland. Jukka from the S60 blogs has offered to show it off on the Nokia N77 in the upcoming Helsinki meet.
I couldn't let the review HTC S710 slip back to the supplier without comparing it as best I could with its equivalent model/match in the Symbian OS world - in this case, the year old Nokia E70. The S710 knocks the E70 for six in the looks department, but then the Nokia starts clawing the points back... Here's the S710/E70 head-to-head.
Thanks to WOM World for pointing out an interesting four-way VoIP solution comparison over on Laptop Magazine's site, reviewing Nimbuzz, Fring, Talkster and Barablu.
In a dazzling array of innovative hardware (twisting screens, dual displays, etc.), Rafe looks at some of the more recent Symbian MOAP phones from Japan, in AAS video podcast number 14. You can watch in the page itself, download in MP4 format or subscribe via RSS. Phones featured include the D903i, D800i DS, SO903i, SH903iTV, F903iX and D903iTV.
Interesting post over on 'See Into S60' about the ultra convergence typified in the 'Boo Hoo for You' video, worrying that with so many security and ID-related functions built-in, losing your smartphone or having it fail might be catastrophic. Read on for the link and my thoughts...
Orange has started publicly talking about Bubbletop, an AJAX web home page. It is a competitor to sites like Netvibes and Pageflakes. The closed alpha of Bubbletop is now open for possible sign up. Bubbletop will join a number of other Orange Web 2.0 services including Pikeo (images and photographs) and SoundTribes (music).
OK, this has started to get silly. Despite a degree in physics, I can't get my head around how this is possible. Samsung have now announced an 8GB microSD card. Given the minute size of microSD, the technology has started to get seriously jaw-dropping. Not that we couldn't all think of ways to use 8GB, of course. Comments and suggestions welcome!
In the first of what will hopefully be a series of new style audio podcasts in 'magazine' format and (eventually) with special guest slots, Rafe, Ewan and I all contribute to AAS podcast 23, covering Mobipocket Reader, choosing between current S60 favourites and the Sony Ericsson P1i.
Symbian have released their Q1 2007 figures, highlights include a total of 15.9 million phones shipped in the first 3 months of the year, cumulative shipments of 126.4 million and cumulative shipments in Japan of 20 million Symbian OS phones.
Well, I was just about to launch into my own review of Nokia's BH-501 stereo Bluetooth headset, but I see AAS friend, S60.com's Phil got there first. And I pretty much agree with his findings. Great gadget but there are occasional cutouts...
