GPS Info Qt gets big updates

Published by at

I had to confess, I'd fallen behind with GPS Info Qt after announcing it to the world. It may sound a bit geeky - and indeed it is, but then we're both geeks, so no worries there then. Now at v1.4.4, as the name suggests, this tiny 90kb utility gives you access to the raw data coming from the internal GPS in your Symbian smartphone. Along with some analysis and no little dash of graphical glitz. Not bad for a freebie!

You can grab GPS Info Qt yourself from the Nokia Store here. Here's the official description:

After a valid Signal is found, it shows your current position and average position, satellites in use and view. Along with showing signal strength there is an option to map your position via Nokia Maps.

Though the early betas were surprisingly fully featured, here's a summary of what's been added in getting to v1.4.4, in changelog form:

  • Now using the latest Qt Components for application with Qt 4.7.4
  • Ability to pick Decimal or Degrees notation
  • Ability to pick Imperial or Metric measurements
  • Fix from older versions that did not display correct notations in the Southern Hemisphere
  • New code to cut down CPU use compared to original releases
  • Now showing Satellite positions in the sky instead of just power ratings
  • Addition of North Reading via Compass
  • Keeps your preferred notation when copying to Clipboard or creating SMS

Early versions of Symbian (S60) had a GPS utility that gave some of this information, recent versions of Symbian hide the raw GPS data completely, so it's great to have a simple, free and comprehensive utility that utterly fills the gap.

If you have even a passing interest in how GPS works, if you need to troubleshoot why you're not getting fixes quickly, or if you have need of a way of sharing your latitude and longitude with others, then run, don't walk and grab GPS Info Qt now.
