Podcasts for your smartphone

Ewan Spence gives a few pointers as to where to start in your trip through the podcasting world on your S60 3rd Edition (or UIQ 3-powered P990i) smartphone.

With Nokia’s Podcasting application putting down a flag in the new media world for the first truly mobile Podcasting media device (although heretics like me just might point out the Wi-Fi enabled Sony PSP as beating them to the punch; [Ed: and heretics like your humble editor might point out that I'd been listening to podcasts for years on my Nokia 9500]), I was posed the interesting question in an email. What podcasts would I recommend?

Technology:

“The Voice of S60” is a podcast from the ever growing stable of blogs run by Nokia to support the Series 60 platform. They interview a number of high profile pople in the S60 world (including our very own Rafe Blandford), it’s a great way to put some voices to the names that keep cropping up over the web.

News:

Ah, but can podcasts replace listening to the news on the radio? Funny you should ask that, because with the added flexibility of Wi-Fi, as long as you can find a good news podcast or two, the answer is yes. The good old BBC has a wide range of podcasts, including news based casts. Your best bet is the “BBC Radio Newspod,” a daily round-up of the newsworthy and interesting items. Fans of the Today programme on Radio 4 can also get the daily interview.

Comedy:

Wait WaitStaying with radio programmes that are also available as podcasts, here's American NPR’s topical comedy quiz show, Wait Wait Don’t Tell Me. Every week, recorded live in Chicago, by Peter Cassel and a rotating band of panellists, the show takes some well aimed potshots at American life, does some lovely interviews in the “Not My Job” section, and generally puts together a really nice hour of gentle comedy.

Entertainment:

And sometimes you need the abrasiveness that is “Cool Shite On The Tube.” A massively irreverent look at the entertainment industry, focusing on the latest movie and DVD releases, the Tasmanian podcast also has a stuffed Tasmanian Devil bouncing around the world from listener to listener. It’s archaic, shotgun, and lacks the structure of the previous few casts, but highly entertaining at the same time.

Music:

TPN Rock

The N91 is born to play music – it’s as simple as that. And sure, just as there’s lots of spoken word podcast content out there, there’s a rich vein of music podcasts to suit every taste. Now, hand on heart, I’m going to recommend my own podcast, TPN Rock, here. As it sounds, it’s rock music, from some of the hottest new bands around. Those of a more gentle persuasion might want to look at AmericanOK’s mix of the new American Midwest country sound, and if you’re in a hurry, check out the your favourite genre at Indiefeed.
