Introduction
YEDIT is a simple text editor that allows you to edit simple text files. In fact, I'm using it to write this review.
Why a text editor should be needed is a good point to ponder. I'm sure the Word application on my Psion5 and 5mx supported the saving of files as plain text. But, 'nuff griping. Let's get on with it.
What does it do?
It will load and save text files. Good eh? But there's more. It allows you to define your chosen font (though this does not affect the saved file - this is a reassuring factor).
You can set your zoom level to something other than the usual zoom settings (anything from 1% - 100%) and use the application in full screen mode (this may not sound too special, but editing text in a small window can be a real pain in the bum).
Other settings include the character set you wish to load and save with (Loasd and Save have their own definitions, which could be very useful), and the ability to show or hide the system tree.
The addition of a full search and replace facility seals this as a great and essential tool for the geek on the go!
Is it perfect?
Nothing in life is perfect and software is no exception. YEDIT has a lot going for it, but I don't think the price is fair. Don't get me wrong, it's not of mortgage proportions, but I think that $25 is a little much for a text editor. Maybe some competition would bring this down a bit?
What would make it better?
My short wish list (most of which are just that, wishes) for this would be;
- Remember recent files
- Allow me to place tabs in the text
- Launch WWW from the current file
- Integration with the Spell Checker
- Remember last zoom level
