Review: Nokia X6 Executive Wallet Case

In a blatant attempt to overthrow me as 'chief AAS case reviewer'(!), Ewan takes on SCreate's Executive Wallet Case for the Nokia X6. Thankfully, he's as fussy as me when it comes to wanting a great case and this one seems to fall distinctly short in a few areas. Watch this space for more X6 case reviews from the bearded one.

With the switch to touchscreen smartphones that take up the full face of a phone, it's more important than ever to pick up a good case for your smartphone (assuming it's not a disposable 5230 you've picked up for a few pounds). Steve's looked at quite a few for the Nokia N97 Mini, and now it's my turn to find something suitable for the Nokia X6.

SCreate's Executive Wallet Case for the Nokia X6 is the weapon of choice for this review. Available from MobileFun.co.uk, it hits all the expected areas in a case of this design... there's a magnetically-assisted press-stud catch; there are cut-outs for all the peripherals, switches and cables; a big hole for the camera lens to see through; white stitching to show it really is stitched.

If you're left handed, best move along now. The leather cover that protects the front of the screen opens like a book, to the left. Holding this in the right hand makes it hard to keep the front cover open while still being able to see and tap the screen. Thankfully I'm right handed, and never had to grow up compensating for the bias in the world, but given a choice of cases this might be a problem for some users. If it wasn't for all the cut-outs then you could easily flip the phone around it the case, but that leads to more problems.

Not that the cut-outs are without problems – the camera shutter button is partially obscured by the edge of the case material, while the volume up button is effectively neutered thanks to the other edge of the material. I'm also not sure why the SIM card lot has to be left accessible, given that you need to remove the battery to slip it out.

There's also the question of how to tap at the edge of the screen – thanks to the capacitive screen, you can't use a nail(!) to hit UI elements at the edge of the screen, you need skin contact. Not a problem on a naked X6, but slap a few millimetres of leather in the way and you can't quite reach the edges. It makes an application like Ovi Maps, with the zoom controls on the edge of the screen, just that little bit harder to use.

So the case has some problems. It does the job of protecting the X6, but not much more. There's no belt loop or hook to make it easily accessible, so your smartphone is still going to be kicking around your pocket or bag. That's enough, but there's a lot of room for improvement from later versions or from other manufacturers. My X6 case search goes on....
