AAS RecommndedIt’s 6.00am and you’re still asleep. In fact, there’s 30 minutes to go until your main alarm goes off. Yet there’s a glow underneath your bed. LEDs flicker and a computer processor grinds into life. The face of your Knight Industries 9210 lights up, the engines roar into life and turbo drive kicks in… (Enough of the Knight Rider, this is not what we pay you for! – Rafe) You mean I get paid? (err… well no, but if we did pay you this isn’t what it would be for - Rafe).

Backtracking to the bed. You’re alseep and your Nokia 9200 series communicator has just purred into life. The phone display shows its profile has just changed from ‘Silent’ to ‘General’, enabling alarms, calls, message notifications and everything else that’s just plain noisy.

9.30am. You’re heading (late) for a meeting and you don’t even have time to think. Luckily, your 9210 is thinking for you, intelligently switching its profile into ‘Meeting’. And as you leave the meeting (on time, for once), the profile gets reset to ‘General’.

12.30pm and lunchtime. Knowing that you’ll need extra help hearing above the hustle and bustle in "The Pig and Whistle" and breaking through into your inebriated state, your communicator sets its own profile for an hour as ‘Outdoor’.

Good Morning, Michael

This sort of magic is all the work of SmartProfiles, which installs itself in your communicator’s Control panel. You can combine scheduled profile adjustments (i.e. at a certain time) with calendar-based ones. In this case, you simply tell SmartProfiles which keywords to look out for (e.g. ‘Meeting’ or ‘Service’) and which profiles you’d like to use and it does the rest.

The utility is trivial to install and use and is totally 'set and forget'. SmartProfiles is a great idea, well implemented. Remembering to change profiles every morning and evening and times in between is now a thing of the past. And one less thing for your poor, overworked brain to have to do…
