What with almost unlimited 3G data and WiFi, this move sets T-Mobile yet another step ahead of the competition in the rush to offer for "free" data access. The full press release follows.

Free WiFi for T-Mobile Broadband customers - every new customer on web’n’walk ˜Plus’ or 'Max’ price plan to benefit

Key features:

  • T-Mobile is the largest provider of public WiFi in the world, with over 1,200 HotSpots in the UK
  • First mobile operator to offer inclusive access to a WiFi network as part of a mobile broadband price plan
  • Prices from £12.50 per month when connecting with a Flext mobile phone contract which now includes access to every T-Mobile WiFi HotSpot
  • Broadband speeds up to 8mbps

London, UK  9 January 2007:  WiFi and high-speed 3G (HSDPA) are being fused together for the first time today. T-Mobile announces the integration of its ground-breaking web’n’walk price plan with its UK network of WiFi HotSpots to offer its customers the best mobile data network, with unprecedented access to broadband on the go   at unbeatable prices.

The largest provider of public WiFi in the world, T-Mobile is the first UK Mobile Broadband operator to offer access to a WiFi network as part of a mobile broadband price plan. Starting at £12.50 per month (when connecting with a Flext mobile contract), the service gives you access to the internet through using your laptop. Additionally, it lets you access the WiFi network on a huge range of locations like Starbucks coffee shops, airports, main-line train stations, service stations and hundreds of other locations in the UK, without paying extra to connect to wireless hotspots. Without T-Mobile’s web’n’walk price plan, access to WiFi costs from £5 for 60 minutes (one off or occasional access), £10 per month for subscription or £20 per month for those without a T-Mobile phone. For a full list of the company’s HotSpots, visit http://t-mobile.hotspot-directory.co.uk.

Richard Warmsley, T-Mobile’s Head of Internet on the Move, said: We’ve already built a market-leading high-speed 3G network nationwide, now we’re strengthening our lead in mobile broadband by adding our wi-fi HotSpots to web’n’walk Plus / Max price plans. So as well as comprehensive 3G HSDPA coverage, you can be sure of a fast connection where it matters most “ whether it’s in Starbucks, the airport, train stations or any other HotSpot location - at no extra cost.

We’re the only network to include unlimited use of our own HotSpots.  We recognise that it’s a quick reliable connection that matters most, not the technology you use to get online.  We also know that customers don’t get bits and bytes so we focus on simple fixed price plans that never have any extra charges, no matter how much surfing you need. Now with our recent 3 network collaboration and the addition of HotSpots in our plans you can be sure that T-Mobile offers the best Mobile Broadband service in the UK.

The new deal means T-Mobile and 3 will integrate their 3G radio access networks (the mobile masts and the infrastructure that connects to each operator’s core network), creating Europe’s most extensive HSDPA network.  This will lead to almost complete population coverage for 3G services across Britain by the end of 2008 with significant fill in and improvement to dense urban in-building coverage in 2009. The ground-breaking network collaboration will accelerate the take up of high-speed mobile broadband services. As the largest provider of public WiFi in the world, T-Mobile customers can also take advantage of 39,000 WiFi HotSpots across the globe.

Can someone correct me? I cannot find ANYTHING on Tmobile's website indicating this new wifi bundle?

You're not alone - T-Mobile have been very bad at informing their own staff about this too. The press release can be found at http://www.t-mobile.co.uk/services/a.../media-centre/

I have had a t-mobile web'n'walk addon to my contract for about 18 months.
I went out this evening to checkout my access to hot spots listed in http://t-mobile.hotspot-directory.co.uk/search.php found I could start browsing with my N95 at the listed BT Openzone hot spots. Not sure if this is something new. Not sure if this is provided by my web'n'walk addon.

How do they control access? Do you get a username and password you have to type in for each hotspot?

Very nice but like most Wi-Fi this is city-centric. Living out in the sticks - all of 40 miles from London - it is of no use to me. Mind you, we can't even get working 3G here!!

I had to switch from my web'n'walk Pro to the web'n'walk Plus account to get the free wifi. You get a user name and password by sms once activated. Note that some web'n'walk Pro account did include for a limited time free wifi.

Not a great deal of use, if you have a 3.5G access anyway.

I am in fact very excited about it. T-Mobile was the first operator to introduce flat rate but consdiering many others also introduce the similiar sort of deals, it is a great move.

My contract was due and intended to switch to other network provider but with this service for someone who work in City, London is simply brillant.

For those people who is using T-Mobile, do not bother to call their customer service which by the way is one of the worst to know their company's goods and services.

You simply send a text message containing "OPEN" (in capital letters) to "9526". You then will receive your username starting with "your phone number"@t-mobile.co.uk and your unique password. I did it in a Starbucks Cafe and its activated within minutes.

Enjoy it guys

I have Nokia N800 with WM6 phone. With this, I can put it in better use rather than using both devices. Save more power as well as more reliable connection. Besides, Voip is more dteady via Wifii
