Messaging IM beta for the E75
Published by Steve Litchfield at 6:40 UTC, June 30th 2009
Nokia is previewing its upcoming Messaging/IM hybrid application by releasing a Java-hosted test version for just the E75, over on Beta Labs. This is the only S60 phone (so far) with permanent full access to Nokia Messaging as a service, but presumably functionality from this will spread in the coming months, as well as it getting wider compatibility. More details below, if you've got an E75, if use either Yahoo Messanger or Ovi Chat, if you don't mind its Java nature, and if you fancy giving this a whirl.
"Nokia Messaging now offers a desktop-like IM experience on your Nokia device. You can stay in contact with your friends across multiple communities, easily switch between and save conversations and login invisibly.
- Chat with your friends on the Yahoo!® Messenger and Ovi communities
- Quickly navigate through multiple conversations across different communities
- Background notifications of new IMs for true multitasking on your phone
- Familiar and integrated community experience -Yahoo-specific emoticons, graphics, and sounds
- Rapidly set status and availability, and login invisibly - choose who you want to talk to
- See your Ovi friends' avatars and set your own
- Save conversations to remember your chat sessions
This beta is available for the E75 device only, and works with Yahoo!® Messenger and Ovi accounts."

I'm very disturbed by this beta release; I don't know why Nokia is bothering with Java on this Beta?!? Specially when they seem to have an incomplete native Symbian Chat client buried deep in the S60 5th edition OS(which seems to be the same one found on S60 3rd edition by the name of IM). And while I understand that they are linking it with Nokia's Messaging Services; it would make better sense for both apps to run seperately(but that's my opinion of course, LOL). Anyway, I discovered it using Handy Taskman and their built in "Lookup & start" function that let's you start any app by typing in the first letters of the app's name. Anyway, I am currently hunting down server settings in hope of getting it to work on my N97; maybe the settings on this beta will work on my N97...

It's weird that IM client is hidden (and PTT is missing) on N97... anyway you can also launch it from the built-in Help.
And you can set it to use with Yahoo directly (search for Yahoo IMPS on Google), or with MSN, Google and other services through Packetbox (there are Onesoup and MobJab, too, but they don't seem to work anymore...)
